Geektown Awards – Best New & Returning Comicbook Series

We are back with the second half of the 11th Annual Geektown Awards, and we kick this last segment off with Best New & Returning Comicbook Series. Last year, Marvel dominated the new series, but can DC tip the scales this time around? On the returning series, there is no ‘Lucifer’ to nab the top spot (as it had done the last couple of years), so what will take its place? Here are the nominations.

Best New Comicbook Series

Despite an impressive showing from Marvel’s Phase 4 series, nothing could topple the genius of Neil Gaiman and The Sandman.

Based on Gaiman’s beloved award-winning DC comic series, the drama stars Tom Sturridge, as The Sandman, aka Dream, aka Morpheus, Master of Dreams, who gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. When Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for over a century, he must journey across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos his absence has caused.

Whilst we don’t have exact numbers from Netflix, Gaiman commented that “millions upon millions of people” had watched it when it was picked up for season two last year. It also spent four weeks in the top ten with over 53,790,000 hours viewed at that point. For those of you who can’t wait for more ‘Sandman’ content, both Tom Sturridge, and Mason Alexander Park, who plays Desire, Morpheus’ sibling and one of the seven Endless, appeared at MCM Comic-Con last year, and you can catch clips from their panel here.

Best Returning Comicbook Series

Nominees: Legends of Tomorrow, Season 7 – Sky Max, Superman & Lois, Season 2 – BBC One, The Boys, Season 3 – Prime Video, The Flash, Season 8 – Sky Max, The Umbrella Academy, Season 3 – Netflix, The Walking Dead, Season 11 – Disney+

Bronze: The Umbrella Academy, Season 3 – Netflix

Silver: The Walking Dead, Season 11 – Disney+

Winner: The Boys, Season 3 – Prime Video

The returning comicbook series category is always a close-run thing, and with ‘The Walking Dead’ ending (or the main show at least), that looked like the one to beat… And when you’re looking for someone to administer a beating, you call in The Boys

Eric Kripke’s (‘Supernatural’) crazy comicbook adaptation follows a group of vigilantes who are there to keep superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians, and as revered as gods – in line. The series has been so popular for Prime Video they order a spin-off series, ‘Gen V’, which is due to land in 2023. There is also a fourth season of the main show ordered too, which sees Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Rosemarie Dewitt, Rob Benedict & Elliot Knight join the current cast of Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Jensen Ackles.
