Live-Action ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Series Ordered From eOne & Paramount
Paramount+ has ordered a live-action ‘Dungeons & Dragons‘ series from eOne, Paramount Pictures, and ‘Red Notice’ filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber, it has been announced.
For those of you who, somehow, have made it this far in life without knowing what ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ is, the tabletop roleplaying game sees the players form an adventuring party who explore fantasy worlds together as they embark on epic quests and level up in experience. The game is overseen by a Dungeon Master (aka DM) who is the game’s referee and storyteller. The world features humans, elves, dwarves, orks, goblins, swords, sorcery, and everything else you would expect from a fantasy land.
Paramount+ has given an eight-episode order to Rawson Marshall Thurber, who wrote the pilot and will direct the first episode. Thurber’s previous work includes the Netflix movie ‘Red Notice’, the Dwayne Johnson action film ‘Skyscraper’, and the Ben Stiller flick ‘Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story’.
It’s unclear exactly what elements of D&D will be used for the series, or exactly what tone Thurber will take with it. Alongside the series, eOne and Paramount Pictures are also producing the upcoming film ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’, which hails from ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ scribes Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley. That is very much a mix of action and comedy, and whilst there is no connection between the two projects from the story side (as far as we know at this point), it might give some indication of the direction the series will take.
The series will be a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures, and will air on Paramount+ in the USA. It’s unclear if Paramount+ UK will also air it at this point, although it does seem likely. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
