‘Batman: Caped Crusader’: Animated Series From Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams & Matt Reeves Ordered For 2 Seasons By Prime Video
The animated series ‘Batman: Caped Crusader‘ has been saved by Amazon according to reports, following Warner Bros Discovery’s decision last year to drop the project from HBO Max.
From ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ creator Bruce Timm, with J.J. Abrams & Matt Reeves exec producing, The series is set to utilize the most state-of-the-art animation techniques and technologies available to once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.
The animated show was originally ordered at HBO Max in May 2021. However, in August 2022, as part of the cost-cutting by Warner Bros Discovery, they decided to ditch the project, although it was announced they would be shopping it to other broadcasters. Now Amazon has stepped in and handed the series a two-season order for Prime Video.
Things have changed rather a lot at DC since ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ was originally ordered back in 2021. James Gunn and Peter Safran took control of the newly created DC Studios which covers tv, animation, film and video games, and are attempting to streamline the main DC output into one cohesive “universe”. Projects, such as Matt Reeve’s ‘The Batman’, the ‘Harley Quinn’ animated series, and this new ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ series are now branded as “Elseworlds” projects, which sit outside of the main DCU.
The series comes from Bruce Timm, the man behind ‘Batman: The Animated Series’, which ran for 4 seasons from 1992-95, and is often hailed as one of the best depictions of the caped crusader on-screen. The thematic complexity and dark aesthetics lifted it from your run-of-the-mill cartoon series to something which sat on a whole different level. Timm and J.J. Abrams, Sam Register, and Ed Brubaker exec produce, alongside Matt Reeves, the man behind ‘The Batman’ movie and sequel, and ‘The Penguin’ spin-off tv series. Warner Bros. Animation, Bad Robot Productions and 6th & Idaho produce the show.
