‘Doctor Who’ 60th Anniversary Specials Get Trailer & Episode Titles!

David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor, alongside Catherine Tate as Donna Noble

by Dave Elliott

As the UK is focused on the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final this evening, the BBC thought it would be the perfect opportunity to drop out the trailer for the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials, which land in November 2023.

The new trailer sees David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor, alongside Catherine Tate who has reprised her role as Donna Noble. It also revealed the titles for the three episodes:

  • Special One: The Star Beast
  • Special Two: Wild Blue Yonder
  • Special Three: The Giggle

The trailer also teasers some epic moments which include leading stars – the legendary Neil Patrick Harris, who takes on a “villainous” role; And fantastic ‘Heartstopper’ actress Yasmin Finney as a character called “Rose” – who step into the world of ‘Doctor Who’ for the 60th-anniversary special episodes.

“The titles are just the beginning of the Doctor’s biggest adventure yet,” said Russell T Davies, Showrunner (and head “Tease Master”). “Autumn is coming, with three hours of danger, Donna and disaster about to be unleashed!”

As for other cast confirmed in the specials, we do know they will see Jacqueline King and Karl Collins reprise their roles as Sylvia Noble and Shaun Temple, along with a final appearance of the dearly departed Bernard Cribbins as Wilfred Mott. Ruth Madeley is also set to appear in the role of “Shirley Ann Bingham”, and Ncuti Gatwa will make his debut appearance as the Fifteenth Doctor.

Interestingly, I’ve just returned from day one of Wales Comic Con, which featured an appearance by former ‘Doctor Who’ companion Martha Jones, aka Freema Agyeman. In the Q&A section of her panel, the inevitable question about whether she might pop up in the 60th Anniversary Specials arose… Freema did her best to deflect and give a non-commital answer, although, I have to say, was not entirely convincing, and did not give an out-and-out “no”… Could be nothing, could be something, but I would not be surprised if Donna is not the only ex-companion to pop up in these episodes…

Doctor Who‘ returns to screens in November 2023 with Tennant starring in the three specials to coincide with the 60th-anniversary which will premiere exclusively on the BBC for the UK and Ireland. Disney+ will air the series internationally. Ncuti Gatwa then takes over in Christmas 2023 as the Fifteenth Doctor.

If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
