‘Dark Winds’ Renewed For Season 3 By AMC, Season 1 Coming Soon To UKTV Alibi

Just days after it was announced Dark Winds had been picked up by Alibi in the UK, US network AMC has announced the drama has been renewed for Season 3.

‘Dark Winds’ is an American psychological, noir thriller created by Graham Roland, based on the Leaphorn & Chee novel series by Tony Hillerman. Set in the 1970s Southwest, the series follows the FBI investigation of a bank robbery in Gallup, N.M., and the Navajo Tribal inquiry into the local murder of two Native residents. Lt. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon – Fargo) and his new deputy Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon – The Twilight Saga) do the heavy lifting around the reservation, which is near Monument Valley. The strange behaviours of some of the residents and the newcomers intertwine with their personal stories as the two men battle the forces of evil and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.

Alongside McClarnon and Gordon, the drama co-stars Jessica Matten (Tribal), Noah Emmerich (The Americans), Deanna Allison and also features Rainn Wilson (The Office).

If you’re wondering if ‘Dark Winds’, which is due to air on UKTV’s Alibi in the UK in October, is worth your time, the reviews for the drama have been extremely good. Both seasons one and two have 100% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and it has been a ratings hit for AMC in the USA, being a top 10 cable drama for the current broadcast season.

The upcoming broadcast on Alibi is technically not a premiere, as ‘Dark Winds’ did previously air on the soon-to-be defuncted AMC UK channel (closes down on 28th September). However, given that particular channel was buried under an exclusive deal on BT TV, meaning very few people had access to it, this will be the first time the show has reached a wider audience in the UK.

This UK acquisition also rather suggests that the long-discussed potential UK launch of an AMC+ streaming service is most likely not going to happen, which is probably a good thing given the number of paid streaming services out there already. We’ve recently learnt that another huge AMC show, Interview with the Vampire has been sold to the BBC, and it has also been noted that Walking Dead: Dead City has been registered with the BBFC (the people that give PG/12/18 etc… ratings), implying that is likely to be released somewhere in the UK soon too. Put all that together, and it seems AMC have opted for selling on their shows to other UK broadcasters, rather than trying to launch their own streaming service in an already overcrowded market.

Based on the iconic Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman, ‘Dark Winds’ is created by Graham Roland (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Returned, Almost Human, Fringe). John Wirth (Hell of Wheels, Hap and Leonard) serves as showrunner. The series is executive produced by Roland, Wirth, McClarnon, Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin, Anne Hillerman, Chris Eyre, Vince Gerardis and Tina Elmo.

Dark Winds‘ Season 1 does not yet have an exact premiere date but will air on UKTV’s Alibi channel in October 2023. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
