‘The Good Doctor’ To End With Season 7

Dr Shaun Murphy is hanging up his stethoscope

After 7 Seasons, Dr Shaun Murphy is hanging up his stethoscope as ABC announces the upcoming season of The Good Doctor will be its last. This seems to be a creative decision rather than a cancellation.

The medical drama stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, who uses his extraordinary medical gifts at St. Bonaventure Hospital’s surgical unit. Highmore and Richard Schiff, who plays Dr. Aaron Glassman, are the only two original cast members to make it through all seven seasons.

“Playing Dr. Shaun Murphy has been an immense privilege and one of the most remarkable and rewarding experiences of my life,” commented Highmore. “I will always be grateful to David, Liz, and Erin as well as the hugely talented – and lovely – cast, writers, and crew who made this show possible. Caring deeply is what got us here. Thank you to Sony and ABC, and to everyone who has watched along at home. With love from Vancouver… tequila, stat!”

The season seven cast also includes Christina Chang (Dr. Audrey Lim), Fiona Gubelmann (Dr. Morgan Reznick), Will Yun Lee ( Dr. Alex Park), Noah Galvin (Dr. Asher Wolke), Bria Samone Henderson (Dr. Jordan Allen) and Chuku Modu (Dr. Jared Kalu). It’s likely a few older faces may pop back up for guest spots over the final few episodes when the show returns this February on ABC for the final season.

The Good Doctor has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but it’s time to say goodbye,” said creator/EP David Shore, alongside EPs Liz Friedman and Erin Gunn in a statement. “We are incredibly proud of the work we’ve done and the message we’ve been privileged to be a part of. We look forward to giving our fantastic fans, the truly extraordinary Freddie Highmore, the rest of our talented actors (and friends), and the best crew in the business the series ending that you all deserve. Thank you, Sony; thank you, ABC; thank you all.”

Following their long-awaited wedding festivities and his promotion to surgical attending, season seven puts Shaun and Lea’s relationship immediately to the test and they must learn to navigate life together as a married couple. Meanwhile, the team is dealing with changes at the hospital and in their personal lives that will present new emotional and interpersonal challenges for them.

You might be also wondering about the mooted spin-off series ‘The Good Lawyer’ which was aired as a “backdoor pilot” during the sixth season. ABC opted not to move forward with that, meaning this is the end of the road for the “franchise”.

Based on a 2013 South Korean series of the same name, The Good Doctor is produced by Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature, a part of Disney Television Studios. Daniel Dae Kim, Thomas L. Moran, David Hoselton, Peter Blake, Jessica Grasl, Garrett Lerner, Mike Listo, Shawn Williamson, David Kim and Sebastian Lee are also executive producers.

The Good Doctor‘ Season 7 premieres February 20, 2024, at 10pm on ABC in the USA. We don’t yet have a UK premiere date, but it will obviously be after that on Sky Witness over here. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
