‘Young Sheldon’ Could Be Getting A ‘Georgie & Mandy’ Spin-Off

Spin-off spawns possible spin-off

by Dave Elliott

‘The Big Bang Theory’ spin-off ‘Young Sheldon’ could be getting a spin-off of its own, as news lands that CBS are looking at a ‘Georgie & Mandy’ series.

‘Young Sheldon’ is set to end this season, but the world may continue as CBS nears a deal for a new series focused on Sheldon’s older brother, George Marshall “Georgie” Cooper Jr (Montana Jordan) and his fiancée Mandy McAllister (Emily Osment). Georgie has been in the show from the beginning, whereas Mandy joined in Season 5 when Georgie began working at Meemaw’s laundromat. There’s quite an age gap between the two characters with Mandy being 29 and Georgie 17. (SPOILERS for Seasons 5/6) The young Cooper Jr lied to Mandy about his age and, by the time she discovered the truth, she was pregnant, which eventually led to them getting engaged in season six.

The older Georgie does show up in ‘The Big Bang Theory’, played by Jerry O’Connell, but at that point is twice divorced and runs a successful chain of tire stores. That does allow the show some room to manoeuvre regarding the plot, but also gives them a destination to aim for, much like ‘Young Sheldon’.

Regarding the cast, Jordan and Osment are expected to reprise their roles as leads, with Iain Armitage and Zoe Perry reprising their roles as Sheldon and their mother, Mary, as required. The format would also revert to being shot as a traditional “multi-cam” sitcom (like ‘Big Bang’) rather than a “single-cam” comedy like ‘Young Sheldon’.

The script for the series would come from Steve Holland, Steven Molaro and Chuck Lorre, who all exec produce, and know the franchise inside out. Lorre is, of course, the mastermind behind both ‘Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Young Sheldon’ (along with ‘Two and a Half Men’, ‘Bob Hearts Abishola’, ‘Mike & Molly’ and a million other comedies). Molaro co-created and was showrunner on ‘Young Sheldon’ and previously was showrunner on ‘BBT’. Holland took over showrunning ‘BBT’ when Molaro moved to ‘Young Sheldon’ before joining him on the prequel when the main show ended.

The potential series for CBS is closing in on a straight-to-series pick-up but has not been officially ordered yet. This is also separate from the other ‘Young Sheldon’ spin-off which is still in development for US streaming service MAX. However, the MAX series is much earlier in development and there are no details at all about what format that may take or who it might follow.

Well let you know if/when we hear more about this potential series, but for now, it is classed as “in development”.
