Sky has confirmed the acquisition of ‘Based On A True Story‘ Season 2 for the UK market, following the huge success of Season 1 on Sky Max and NOW.
A dark, comedic thriller, Based On A True Story is a satire of the true crime genre with elements that are loosely inspired by true events. Season 1 follows Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and her husband Nathan (Chris Messina), a down-on-their-luck couple, whose lives collide with an infamous serial killer terrorising Los Angeles and seize a unique opportunity to capitalise on America’s obsession with true crime by making a podcast with the killer.
“We are delighted to confirm Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina will be returning to Sky for a second season of dark comedy Based On A True Story,” said Katie Keenan, Group Director of Acquisitions, Sky UK. “The first series was a huge hit and we can’t wait to see what the next series has in store for the true crime-obsessed duo.”
Emmy Award nominee Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant) stars as ‘Ava Bartlett,’ alongside Chris Messina (Air) as ‘Nathan’ and Tom Bateman (Thirteen Lives) as ‘Matt’ in your next obsession. Priscilla Quintana, Liana Liberato, Natalia Dyer, Alex Alomar Akpobome, Aisha Alfa, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, and Li Jun Li also star.
If you haven’t caught the show yet, you can catch up via Sky On Demand and NOW.. now. Tonally, I would say it is similar to Cuoco’s previous drama ‘The Flight Attendant’. Thrilling, darkly funny, and a little weird in places, ‘Based on a True Story’ is well worth a watch.
Cuoco, Jason Bateman, and Michael Costigan (Aggregate Films) exec produce the series alongside director Alex Buono. Roxie Rodriguez (Aggregate Films) and Melissa Blake co-exec produce. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group is the studio.
Whilst Sky has confirmed they have acquired season two, we don’t yet know when it will premiere. It doesn’t have a premiere date on Peacock, where it airs in the USA, and filming was delayed last year due to the dual actor’s and writer’s strikes. We will, of course, let you know as soon as we get a UK premiere date.
