Channel 5 Renews ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ For Seasons 5 & 6!

A LOT more creatures, great and small.

by Dave Elliott

There’s about to be a LOT more creatures (great and small) coming to Channel 5, as the UK broadcaster renews the drama All Creatures Great and Small for Seasons 5 & 6, plus Christmas Specials!

James Herriot’s adventures as a veterinarian in 1930/40s Yorkshire get a glorious adaptation in a series based on his internationally celebrated books. Nicholas Ralph plays the iconic vet who became renowned for his inspiring humour, compassion and love of life.

In some good news for fans, Callum Woodhouse, who was missing from the last Christmas Special, will return as Tristan Farnon, the mischievous younger brother of head vet Siegfried Farnon who has been serving in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. He makes an “unexpected reappearance” later in season five according to the broadcaster.

The returning cast also includes Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon, Anna Madeley as Mrs Hall, Rachel Shenton as Helen Herriot, James Anthony-Rose as Richard Carmody and Patricia Hodge as Mrs Pumphrey (along with her adored pampered Pekingese, Tricki.)

The new seasons will continue to bring the stories of James Herriot to life as we return to Darrowby to join our unconventional much-loved Skeldale Family and the colourful ensemble of farmers, animals and townsfolk living in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1940s. Filming will take place on location in Yorkshire for both seasons 5 and 6.

Also returning for season five are writers Debbie O’Malley (Payback, The Guilty) who will write episodes 1 and 6 and Maxine Alderton (All Creatures Great and Small, Doctor Who) who will write episodes 2 and 4. They are joined by writers Matt Evans (Phoenix Rise, A Town Called Malice) who will write episode 3 and Robin French (Cuckoo, The Great) will write episode 5. Brian Percival (All Creatures Great and Small, Dark Angel) returns as Lead Director and Executive Producer of Episodes 1 and 2, Stewart Svaasand (Tin Star, Outlander) returns to direct episodes 3 & 4, and Andy Hay (All Creatures Great and Small, The Last Kingdom) will direct Episodes 5, 6 and the Christmas Special. Yvonne Francas (The Syndicate, Our Girl) also returns as Producer.

All Creatures Great and Small‘ airs on Channel 5 in the UK and PBS in the USA. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
