ITVX Picks Up All 5 Seasons Of The Brilliant Sci-fi Series ‘Fringe’

by Dave Elliott

ITVX continues to build its back catalogue of older US shows as it adds all 5 seasons of the utterly brilliant and wonderfully bonkers Fringe from September.

For those of you who haven’t previously caught the series which ended in 2013, it’s a tricky show to describe without giving too much away… It starts out seemingly something of a ‘X-Files’ clone, but, very soon morphs into something a whole lot more complex. Each season takes a sharp right turn, as our protagonists wade deeper and deeper into a crazy conspiracy.

According to the official series overview, it is a science-fiction thriller series about an unlikely trio who uncover a deadly mystery involving unbelievable events. ‘Fringe’ delves beneath the surface as they realise that they may be part of a larger, more disturbing pattern that blurs the line between the possible and the impossible… Although, that doesn’t really tell you a lot!

In the pilot episode, an international flight lands at Boston’s Logan Airport with no signs of life aboard, so FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) is called in to investigate as part of an inter-agency task force. After her partner, Special Agent John Scott (Mark Valley), is nearly killed during the investigation, a desperate Olivia searches frantically for someone to help, leading her to Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble), our generation’s Einstein. There’s only one catch: he’s been institutionalised for the last 17 years, and the only way to question him requires pulling his estranged son Peter (Joshua Jackson) in to help.

When Olivia’s investigation leads to multi-billion dollar corporation Massive Dynamic and its manipulative corporate executive, Nina Sharp (Blair Brown), our unlikely trio, along with Department of Homeland Security Agent Phillip Broyles (Lance Reddick) and FBI Agents Charlie Francis (Kirk Acevedo) and Astrid Farnsworth (Jasika Nicole), will discover that what happened on that fatal flight is only a small piece of a larger, more shocking truth.

The series was created by J. J. Abrams (Alias, Lost), Alex Kurtzman (current boss of all things Star Trek) and Roberto Orci (Sleepy Hollow, Star Trek Into Darkness), and originally aired on Fox in the USA from 2008-2013.

If you have never seen ‘Fringe‘, or if you just fancy a rewatch of this brilliant sci-fi series, you can catch all five seasons on ITVX from Thursday, 12th September 2024.
