Apple TV+ has renewed ‘Sugar‘, the Colin Farrell-led PI drama, with a (massive!) twist, for a 2nd Season the streaming service has announced.
‘Sugar’ is described as a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story. In season one, Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell). As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.
Except… – without spoiling anything – that really is only half the story… Whilst it is very much, a solid, enjoyable, well-crafted, contemporary, engaging PI story, about halfway through, it throws in one of the most astounding “WTF!?” moments of TV since Buffy’s mother said, “If you’re going out, why don’t you take your sister?”…
Season two is set to continue with Sugar finding himself back in Los Angeles taking on another missing person’s case, as he continues to look for answers surrounding his missing sister.
Alongside Farrell, season one also starred Kirby Howell-Baptiste (“The Sandman”), Amy Ryan (“The Wire”), James Cromwell (“Succession”), Anna Gunn (“Breaking Bad”), Dennis Boutsikaris (“Better Call Saul”), Nate Corddry (“Mindhunter”), Sydney Chandler (“Don’t Worry Darling”), and Alex Hernandez (“Invasion”).
“It has been incredibly exciting to see audiences around the world embrace Sugar, and we are thrilled to return for a second season,” commented exec producers Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg. “We’re so grateful to our partners at Apple for their support, our showrunner Sam Catlin, the brilliant Colin Farrell, and of course, our viewers. We can’t wait to get John Sugar back on the case.”
‘Sugar’ was created by Mark Protosevich (‘I Am Legend’, ‘Thor’), who also executive produced and served as showrunner on season one. However, showrunning duties have been handed over to Sam Catlin for season two, who was previously showrunner on ‘Preacher’, wrote numerous episodes of the excellent ‘Breaking Bad’, and was an exec producer on season one. Catlin exec produces season two for Short Drive Entertainment, alongside Farrell, Chon, Kinberg, and Chip Vucelich.
“Since its premiere, audiences have been gripped by the mysteries and twists of Sugar, with an incredible performance by Colin Farrell at the centre,” adds Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. “Colin, Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon and the entire team behind this series have brilliantly blended genres to create a compelling, can’t-miss series that keeps viewers guessing, and we cannot wait to see where Detective John Sugar finds himself in season two.”
‘Sugar‘ Season 1 is available on Apple TV+ right now (and we urge you to go and watch!) If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
