First Look At James Norton & Nikolaj Coster-Waldau In BBC’s Historical Drama ‘King & Conqueror’

by Dave Elliott

The BBC has released some “first look” images for the upcoming historical drama King & Conqueror, which sees James Norton star as Harold, Earl of Wessex, opposite Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as William, Duke of Normandy.

‘King & Conqueror’ is the story of a clash that defined the future of a country – and a continent – for a thousand years, the roots of which stretch back decades and extend out through a pair of interconnected family dynasties, struggling for power across two countries and a raging sea. Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men destined to meet at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; two allies with no design on the British throne, who found themselves forced by circumstance and personal obsession into a war for possession of its crown.

The series will star James Norton (Happy Valley, Bob Marley: One Love) as Harold, Earl of Wessex and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) as William, Duke of Normandy, with Emily Beecham (1899, Little Joe) as Edith Swan Neck, the wife of Harold, and Clémence Poésy (In Bruges, The Tunnel) as Matilda, the wife of William.

The series also stars Eddie Marsan (The Power, Ray Donovan) as King Edward; Juliet Stevenson (Truly, Madly, Deeply, Riviera) as Lady Emma; Jean-Marc Barr (The Big Blue, American Translation) as King Henry; Luther Ford (The Crown) as Tostig; Geoff Bell (Absentia, Top Boy) as Godwin; Elliot Cowan (Black Cake, Foundation) as Sweyn; Bo Bragason (Renegade Nell, The Jetty) as Queen Gunhild; Bjarne Henriksen (The Hunt, Borgen) as Earl Siward; Oliver Mascucci (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Look Who’s Back) as Baldwin; Clare Holman (Inspector Morse, Lewis) as Gytha; Elander Moore (Interview with the Vampire, KAOS) as Morcar; Indy Lewis (Industry) as Margaret; Jason Forbes (A Gentleman in Moscow) as Thane Thomas; Ingvar Sigurdsson (Killing Eve, Rebel Moon) as Fitzosbern; Ines Asserson (Shetland, Royalteen) as Judith; Sveinn Ólafur Gunnarsson (Vitjanir) as Hardrada; And Léo Legrand (Endless Night) as Odo.

The eight-episode series is created and executive produced by Michael Robert Johnson and executive produced by James Norton and Kitty Kaletsky for Rabbit Track Pictures, Baltasar Kormákur for RVK Studios, Robert Taylor for The Development Partnership, Dave Clarke and Richard Halliwell for Shepherd Content, Ed Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and CBS Studios’ Lindsey Martin. Baltasar Kormákur will direct the premiere episode and, as executive producer, will steer the creative across the series.

Filming has begun in Iceland and is produced by The Development Partnership, Rabbit Track Pictures, Shepherd Content, RVK Studios and CBS Studios. The BBC has acquired broadcasting rights for the series in the United Kingdom and it is distributed outside of the UK by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

King & Conqueror‘ does not yet have a premiere date but will premiere in 2025 on the BBC in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any of the shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when the next season gets a UK premiere date.
