Sony has released a trailer for ’28 Years Later’, which reunites Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award-nominated writer Alex Garland for a terrifying new story set in the world created by ’28 Days Later’.
It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.
The new movie stars Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, Help), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass, Avengers: Age of Ultron), Jack O’Connell (SAS: Rogue Heroes, Ferrari), Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes (Schindler’s List, The English Patient).
The film is directed by Danny Boyle, and written by Alex Garland, who created the original ’28 Days Later’ movie, and exec produced the sequel, ’28 Months Later’. Interestingly, the entire film was not shot using standard film equipment but used iPhone 15 Pros (albeit with some fancy adapted lenses!) It was also shot back-to-back with the sequel film, ’28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple’, which is directed by Nia DaCosta (The Marvels, Candyman), with a screenplay from Garland and Boyle.
One name you might notice is missing from the cast is Cillian Murphy, although he is listed as an exec producer on the film. He is supposed to be starring in “Part II” according to reports, however, the trailer above does seem to show a rather zombified version of Murphy’s “Jim” from ’28 Days Later’, so unless the sequel is told in flashback, I’m not sure how that works!
The film is produced by Boyle, Garland, Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice and Bernard Bellew. The studio is Columbia Pictures in association with BFI, DNA Films, and Decibel Films. It is released by Sony Pictures.
’28 Years Later’ is to due to land in cinemas from Friday, 20th June 2025 in the UK.
