CBS Looking To Get In On The ‘Yellowstone’ Action With Another Spin-Off

by Dave Elliott

Paramount+’s Yellowstone is the franchise that keeps on giving, and now, CBS are looking to get in directly on the action with its own spin-off, based around Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes.

The main Yellowstone, along with spin-offs 1883, 1923 and upcoming series The Madison have all aired (or are set to air) on Paramount’s streaming service. However, this potential new show is being considered directly for Paramount’s broadcast network, CBS. According to reports, the series, which has been in development for over a year, would see Luke Grimes reprising his role as livestock commissioner and former Navy SEAL Kayce Dutton.

What makes this rather different to the other shows is that it is pitched as a procedural, which would utilise Kayce’s Navy SEAL background in some way. That makes sense when the person shepherding the new show is Spencer Hudnut, who was EP and one of the showrunners on Paramount’s ‘SEAL Team’.

When we last saw Kayce in the main ‘Yellowstone’ series finale (SPOILERS), he signed the land over to Rainwater’s tribe for $1.25 an acre, the price he says his ancestor, James Dutton (played by Tim McGraw in ‘1883’), paid for it when the family settled there. However, he put a condition on the sale to say it can never be developed, and he, his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and his son Tate (Brecken Merrill), would be allowed to remain in a house they built in a small area of the land.

This is not the only new spin-off in the works from the ‘Yellowstone’ brand. There is also ‘6666’, set in the present day on the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas; ‘1944’, which is a sequel series to ‘1923’; And an untitled spin-off starring Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly, who would reprise their respective roles as Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton, elder sister of Kayce. These are all classed as “in development” so may not go to series.

The next new instalment in the “Yellowstone universe” is The Madison, a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana. That stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams,
Elle Chapman and Matthew Fox.

We stress, the untitled ‘Kayce Dutton Yellowstone Spin-Off’ is currently classed as “in development” for CBS, and may not go to series, but we’ll let you know if and when we hear more.
