Marvel fans will get at least one of their wishes come true, as Disney announces Krysten Ritter will reprise her role as Jessica Jones in ‘Daredevil: Born Again‘ Season 2.
In ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavours to become Mayor of New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.
When we left Matt at the end of season one (SPOILERS) it had become clear that Mayor Fisk’s Kingpin persona is no where near as buried as he would like the public to believe… Most notably as he squishes a man’s head, whilst his newly-formed corrupt anti-vigilante task force look on… Fisk also, alongside his wife, Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer), is attempting to set up a separate city-state in the Red Hook port. Meanwhile, Matt, now back in the devil horns, forms a grassroots “army” to take the city back for the greater good of everybody. Presumably, that is where Jessica Jones will come in for season two.
“It is so great to be back, returning to Jessica after three seasons and The Defenders, and now joining the MCU,” said Ritter at Disney’s Upfront event yesterday. “I am so excited to bring back this iconic character. And without giving too much away, there’s much more in store for Jessica Jones. This is going to be an incredible season.”
Krysten Ritter gained widespread acclaim for her portrayal of the sharp-tongued, hard-drinking private investigator in Marvel’s ‘Jessica Jones’. Premiering on Netflix in 2015, the series quickly set itself apart with its gritty noir tone and psychological depth, with Ritter’s performance anchoring the show as both vulnerable and fiercely uncompromising. Her take on Jessica, as a reluctant hero haunted by trauma and driven by a strong moral compass, helped redefine what a superhero series could be, earning praise for its complex themes and standout lead.
Whilst we have already had Jon Bernthal‘s Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, show up in season one, this will be the first of The Defenders quartet to appear in this new iteration of Daredevil. We’ll have to wait and see if it’s followed by Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist.
In addition to Ritter, Charlie Cox himself has teased a rather more expanded role in season two for Deborah Ann Woll‘s Karen Page, who only popped up a couple of times in season one. Confirming Page will be in “a lot more” of the next season, he added, “some of the stuff she’s up to is some of the coolest stuff she’s ever had.”
