Produced by Element Pictures, a Fremantle company (Poor Things, Normal People), the series is set to premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.

The Cage is described as a high-stakes, high-energy crime story set in the world of a Liverpool casino, anchored by two unforgettable characters played by Sheridan Smith (Cilla, The C Word, Mrs Biggs) and Michael Socha (The Gallows Pole, Showtrial).

Joining them in the cast are Barry Sloane (House of the Dragon) as Gary, Geraldine James (Dope Girls) as Nancy, Anton Bibby as Thomas, Freya Jones as Emily, Sophie Mensah (Sanctuary: A Witches Tale) as Fen, Abby Mavers (Waterloo Road) as Kelly, Shaun Mason (Extraordinary) as Alan, Louis Emerick (The Power of Parker) as Paul, Ian Puleston Davies (Tin Star) as Vincent, Julia Papp (Baptiste) as Irina, Katy Carmichael (Malpractice) as DCI Hannigan, Dave Hart (The Responder) as Danny, Eileen O’Brien (Not Going Out) as Nanna, Eithne Browne (The Responder) as Annie, and Mona Goodwin (Extraordinary) as Trace.

The plot kicks off when Leanne (Smith) and Matty (Socha) both attempt to rob the same casino safe, unaware the other is doing the same. Their double-cross sets off a chain of events that puts them in the crosshairs of each other, a dangerous local gangster, and the police.

Filmed in and around Liverpool and Merseyside, the series is directed by Al Mackay (Kidnapped, Without Sin).

The Cage was commissioned by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama. It is produced by Clare Shepherd, with executive producers Hilary Martin for Fremantle, Christopher Aird, Ed Guiney, and Andrew Lowe for Element Pictures, as well as Tony Schumacher and Sheridan Smith.
