CBS Drops First Trailer For ‘Boston Blue’ As Danny Reagan Meets His Match

by Dave Elliott

CBS has released the first trailer for Boston Blue, the upcoming Blue Bloods spinoff, which sees Donnie Wahlberg (Blue Bloods, Band of Brothers) return as Detective Danny Reagan. Danny may have left the NYPD for the Boston PD, but judging by the promo, old habits die hard, and his new partner is not exactly rolling out the welcome mat.

In the trailer, Danny is chasing a suspect through Boston when he is suddenly stopped at gunpoint by Detective Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery, The Walking Dead). Danny insists he is a cop, even flashing what he calls his “shield.” Lena, unimpressed, replies: “You mean your badge?” Danny shoots back: “Where I am from, it is a shield.” It is the kind of clash that sets the tone for their reluctant partnership.

Despite their rocky start, the pair are forced to team up. Lena calls Danny out on his “reputation,” to which he drily responds, “for getting things done.” The uneasy truce does not stop the show from embracing one of the Blue Bloods franchise’s most beloved traditions: family dinners. Lena invites Danny to her Friday night Shabbat meal, where her pastor grandfather (played by Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters, The Crow)) declares: “We are one family, and we have faith in our family.” For fans, it is a clear nod to the Reagan clan’s famous Sunday sit-downs.

Meet the Silvers

Alongside Wahlberg and Martin-Green, the series introduces a whole new Boston family to anchor the spinoff.

  • Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters, Oz) plays Reverend Peters, Lena’s grandfather and a respected pastor who helps ground the family’s sense of faith.
  • Maggie Lawson (Psych, Santa Clarita Diet) stars as Sarah Silver, Lena’s stepsister and the strong-willed superintendent of the Boston PD.
  • Gloria Reuben (ER, Mr. Robot) takes on the role of Mae Silver, Lena’s mother and Boston’s district attorney, who carries the weight of both her family and her office after her judge husband was murdered.
  • Marcus Scribner (Black-ish, Grown-ish) rounds out the core family as Jonah Silver, Lena’s younger brother and a rookie cop, echoing the way Jamie Reagan once represented the NYPD’s next generation.

Between the Silvers and Danny Reagan, Boston Blue is shaping up to keep the multigenerational, family-centered heart that made Blue Bloods so popular while carving out its own Boston identity.

‘Boston Blue’ had an unusual journey to screen. The drama began life as an original pitch from Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis (S.W.A.T., The Blacklist), about a Boston law enforcement family whose eldest daughter is paired with a new transfer from LAPD. CBS liked the idea but spotted an opportunity to swap the LAPD character for Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan and turn it into an official Blue Bloods spinoff. Given Wahlberg’s real-life ties to Boston, it felt like a perfect fit.

Martin-Green has already expressed her excitement about joining the Reagan universe, saying:

“We love the Reagans. We have all loved the Reagans for so long. Being Detective Lena Silver, who is coming from a prominent law enforcement family, you will love the Silvers too. I am super excited for this partnership and to be back in the CBS family.”

The series is produced by CBS Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Television, with Sonnier and Margolis serving as showrunners alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and Wahlberg himself as executive producers.

UK Future Still Up In The Air

There is no UK premiere date for Boston Blue yet. Sky Witness has long been the home of Blue Bloods, making them the obvious frontrunners. However, the recent Skydance takeover of Paramount (CBS’s parent company) could complicate things.

Traditionally, Paramount sells CBS procedurals to the highest bidder internationally, which often means Sky in the UK. But the new owners may want to hold back some shows to strengthen their own platforms. In the UK, that could mean keeping Boston Blue for Paramount+ or airing it across their Channel 5 portfolio, such as 5, 5USA and 5ACTION.

The challenge is that holding shows internally does not bring in direct cash. Selling to Sky guarantees money upfront, while keeping them exclusive to Paramount+ or Channel 5 is a longer-term bet on driving subscribers or ad revenue. It will be interesting to see whether Skydance goes for the quick profit or tries to build the Paramount ecosystem.

It is also worth remembering that Blue Bloods itself wrapped earlier this year with Season 15, ending a decade and a half run as one of CBS’s most reliable dramas. That makes Boston Blue not just a spinoff but also the franchise’s spiritual continuation, carrying the Reagan legacy into new territory.

We recently included Boston Blue in our roundup of U.S. TV Shows (Currently) Without UK Broadcasters, and fans on this side of the Atlantic will be watching closely to see where it lands.

Boston Blue’ premieres Friday, 17th October 2025 at 10/9c on CBS in the USA. It does not yet have a UK premiere date. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you will be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
