Elgin James’ ‘Prison Break’ Reboot Ordered To Series At Hulu With Emily Browning And Drake Rodger Leading

by Dave Elliott

The Prison Break universe is expanding again, as Hulu has officially ordered Elgin James’ new legacy sequel to series. No blueprints or full-body tattoos this time, but the story still promises plenty of high-stakes escapes and moral tension.

In this new chapter of Prison Break, a soldier-turned-corrections officer takes a job at one of the deadliest prisons in America, testing how far she’ll go for someone she loves. It’s set in the same world as the original Fox series but focuses on new characters rather than Michael Scofield or Lincoln Burrows, played by Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell.

The series stars Emily Browning (American Gods) and Drake Rodger (The Winchesters) in the lead roles as Cassidy and Tommy, alongside Lukas Gage (The White Lotus) as Jackson, Clayton Cardenas (Mayans M.C.) as Michael “Ghost,” JR Bourne (Teen Wolf) as Junior, Georgie Flores (Euphoria) as Andrea, and Myles Bullock (BMF) as Darius “Red.” The pilot also featured Priscilla Delgado, Ray McKinnon, Margo Martindale, Donal Logue, Lili Taylor, and Sylvester Powell.

Elgin James, co-creator of Mayans M.C., serves as showrunner, executive producer, writer, and director, with returning Prison Break producer Dawn Olmstead joining Paul Scheuring, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz. The series comes from 20th Television and was filmed in West Virginia earlier this year.

The original Prison Break ran from 2005 to 2009, following Michael’s plan to break his brother out of death row, before returning for a fifth season in 2017. Two decades later, its popularity hasn’t faded. Nielsen ranked it as the most-streamed series in the US in August 2024.

James’ grounded storytelling and moral complexity from Mayans M.C. suggest this continuation will explore loyalty and survival through fresh eyes, but with the same pulse-pounding energy that made the original such a phenomenon.

Prison Break does not yet have a premiere date, but will air on Hulu in the US and Disney+ in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
