Prime Video has dropped the first images from ‘Scarpetta‘, the long-awaited adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s bestselling forensic thrillers, arriving on the streamer in March. Kidman steps into the role of Dr Kay Scarpetta, a character who has sold more than 120 million books worldwide and shaped the modern crime genre for more than three decades. After years of failed attempts to bring the series to screen, it looks like Amazon MGM Studios has finally cracked the case.
Created for television by Emmy-nominated writer Liz Sarnoff, the series mixes high-stakes contemporary forensics with a story that unfolds across two distinct timelines. It finds Scarpetta pulled back to her hometown as she resumes her role as Chief Medical Examiner, stepping straight into a fresh murder investigation that drags up old wounds and an older case that once made her career. The pressure is unrelenting and the ghosts have sharp edges.
Kidman leads a stacked cast that includes Jamie Lee Curtis (The Bear), Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire), Simon Baker (The Mentalist), and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story). The dual timeline also lets the show play with past incarnations of these characters, portrayed by Rosy McEwen, Amanda Righetti, Jake Cannavale, and Hunter Parrish.
Sarnoff serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, working alongside a sprawling list of producers that includes Kidman and Per Saari through Blossom Films, Curtis through Comet Pictures, and Patricia Cornwell herself. David Gordon Green directs five episodes and also joins the producing team. Given the pedigree, Scarpetta looks set to hit the sweet spot between polished prestige drama and grisly, character-driven crime.
The show digs into Scarpetta’s drive to speak for the dead, her fractious bond with her sister Dorothy, and the long shadows left by a serial killer who once defined her career. Prime Video is pitching this as a psychological thriller as much as a forensic one, so expect bite marks on the psyche as well as the evidence.
‘Scarpetta‘ Season 1 premieres Wednesday, 11th March 2026 on Prime Video.
