Disney+ has cracked open the next chapter of Gilead, revealing first-look images from the highly anticipated drama ‘The Testaments‘, coming this April. The series arrives from Bruce Miller, showrunner and executive producer of The Handmaid’s Tale, and takes viewers several years beyond the events of that original story.
Based on Margaret Atwood’s Booker Prize-winning novel, ‘The Testaments’ shifts the focus to a new generation of young women who have never known a world outside Gilead’s grip. Indoctrinated since childhood and facing futures mapped out by duty and servitude, their search for freedom becomes a dangerous and deeply personal fight for survival.
The images unveiled during CCXP25 Brazil give us a glimpse at the trio of young leads at the heart of the story. The cast includes Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale), Chase Infiniti (The Other Black Girl), Lucy Halliday (Femme), Rowan Blanchard (Girl Meets World), Mattea Conforti (The Sopranos), Isolde Ardies (Ginny & Georgia), Shechinah Mpumlwana (The Expanse), and Birva Pandya (World’s Best), with Mabel Li (The Newsreader), Amy Seimetz (The Killing), Brad Alexander (The Expanse), Zarrin Darnell Martin (Departure), Eva Foote (Three Pines), and Kira Guloien (Reacher) also appearing.
Behind the camera, ‘The Testaments’ is brought to life by creator and showrunner Bruce Miller, and executive producers Warren Littlefield, Elisabeth Moss, Steve Stark, Shana Stein, Maya Goldsmith, John Weber, Sheila Hockin, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, and Mike Barker, who also directs the first three episodes. The series is produced by MGM Television.
The result looks set to be an atmospheric continuation of Atwood’s universe, exploring resistance, identity and the heavy cost of hope in a society that has tried to eradicate it. Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale will no doubt be watching closely as the next generation steps forward.
