The long-running Canadian crime drama ‘Murdoch Mysteries‘ is back on UK screens this January, with season 19 bringing explosions, political corruption, surprise guest stars and a few familiar faces dragged out of retirement.
The new series opens with a literal bang as Detective William Murdoch finds himself investigating an explosion at the morgue. With Station House #4 shuttered and corruption suspected at the highest levels, Murdoch is forced to rally Brackenreid and the rest of the team to take on Mayor Vaughan, even if it means operating as private citizens.
As if that was not enough, Murdoch is also juggling fatherhood, George Crabtree is considering a career change, and Effie Newsome-Crabtree finds herself facing workplace injustice.
Old Friends, New Mysteries And A Packed Guest Line-Up
Season 19 leans hard into what the show does best, blending historical oddities with inventive mysteries and a strong dose of wit. Cases this year include the murder of a fashion mogul with far too many enemies, a politically charged kidnapping of a Japanese scholar, a deadly game show, wild animal attacks in High Park, and a hostage situation at a roadside inn.
The scale also expands beyond Toronto, with stories taking Murdoch and Brackenreid to Calgary’s first Stampede and even onto a speeding train to the nation’s capital for a spy-filled showdown.
Guest stars this season include Sally Lindsay (Coronation Street), who appears in episode 11, alongside Luann de Lesseps in the premiere. A festive episode also features Dave Foley and Scott Thompson of The Kids in the Hall, plus Steven Page of The Barenaked Ladies. Jason Mewes (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) is also set to guest star.
Christina Jennings, President and Chairman of Shaftesbury, says:
“Season 19 is as ambitious and entertaining as ever, featuring a fantastic lineup of guest stars who bring must-see moments. From our nation’s capital to Alberta’s rugged landscapes, filming took us to some stunning Canadian locations. And for the second year running, Ovation’s audience can tune in day-and-date with our Canadian broadcast.”
