Apple TV is doubling down on its Monsterverse ambitions, heading back to the Cold War era with a brand new, currently untitled prequel spin-off set in the ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ universe. The new series will once again put the spotlight on Lee Shaw, played by Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), this time focusing on a younger version of the character during a highly classified 1984 mission that sounds like it goes wrong in precisely the way Monsterverse missions always do.
Set at the height of Cold War paranoia, the series follows Colonel Shaw as he is sent “behind enemy lines” to investigate and ultimately stop a Soviet-backed plan involving the creation or deployment of a new Titan. Naturally, this is not just a big monster problem, but a geopolitical one too, with the potential to shift the balance of global power in catastrophic fashion. Because if history has taught us anything, it’s that adding kaiju to international brinkmanship rarely calms things down.
For fans of ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’, the spin-off represents a chance to dig much deeper into one of the show’s most compelling characters. Lee Shaw has always existed at the crossroads of secrecy, military authority, and the unknowable horrors lurking beneath the Earth’s surface, and placing him in the 1980s opens the door to exploring Monarch’s murkier history, its uneasy alliances, and just how much the world’s governments actually knew about Titans decades before Godzilla started making regular appearances.
Apple TV also used the announcement to confirm that Joby Harold will serve as showrunner on the prequel. Harold has additionally signed an overall deal with Legendary, placing him in charge of overseeing Legendary’s Monsterverse television projects for Apple TV going forward. That’s a clear signal that Apple and Legendary are thinking long-term here, with interconnected storytelling and future expansion very much on the agenda.
This new series joins an already growing slate of Monsterverse content on the platform. Alongside the spin-off news, Apple confirmed that ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ will officially return for a second season in February 2026, continuing the present-day storyline that ties together multiple generations of characters with the long shadow cast by the Titans.
While plot specifics for Season 2 are being kept firmly under wraps, the combination of a returning flagship series and a Cold War-set prequel suggests Apple is aiming to turn the Monsterverse into one of its cornerstone sci-fi franchises, sitting alongside the likes of ‘Foundation’ and ‘Silo’, but with significantly more property damage.
