Channel 4 Drops First Extended Trailer For ‘A Woman Of Substance’ Starring Brenda Blethyn & Jessica Reynolds

by Dave Elliott

Channel 4 has released the first extended trailer for A Woman Of Substance, the brand-new adaptation of the multi-million bestselling novel by Barbara Taylor Bradford OBE. Previously Emmy-nominated and Channel 4’s biggest ever drama when it first aired 40 years ago, this fresh take promises a sweeping revenge saga that feels just as sharp and relevant today.

The new trailer gives us our first proper look at Brenda Blethyn (Vera, Pride and Prejudice) and Jessica Reynolds (House of Guinness, Kneecap) as two generations of Emma Harte. From impoverished Yorkshire housemaid to global business titan, Emma’s story spans decades, continents, and class divides as she builds an empire in a world determined to keep her in her place.

Set in 1911, the drama follows Emma Harte, an ambitious maid in Yorkshire, England, who embarks on a dizzying journey to become the world’s richest woman, ultimately gazing down from a sprawling luxury New York penthouse. A rags-to-riches tale of women through the 20th century, Emma defies the expectations of her society, fearlessly challenging the roles she’s given, smashing glass ceilings, and never, ever deviating from her masterplan: Get to the top. Whatever it takes.

Produced by The Forge Entertainment, a Banijay UK company, the eight-part series is written by Katherine Jakeways and co-written by Roanne Bardsley. Executive producers are Beth Willis, Joe Innes, George Faber, Katherine Jakeways and The Barbara Taylor Bradford Trust, with Roanne Bardsley serving as co-executive producer. Charlie Palmer produces, with John Hardwick directing block one, Samantha Harrie block two and Richard Senior block three. The series will be distributed internationally by Banijay Rights.

Filming took place in Yorkshire, giving the drama an authentic northern backbone before Emma’s ambitions carry her far beyond it.
