‘Doctor Foster’ Series 3 Confirmed: Suranne Jones Returns For Final Chapter

by Dave Elliott

BBC drama Doctor Foster is making a comeback, with the BBC confirming a third and final series is on the way. Creator and writer Mike Bartlett is returning to pen the five-part run, with Suranne Jones reprising her BAFTA-winning role as Gemma Foster, alongside Bertie Carvel as Simon and Tom Taylor as son Tom. Filming is set to begin this Spring.

It has been almost a decade since we last visited Parminster. When Doctor Foster wrapped its second series in 2017, Gemma’s teenage son Tom had vanished, and the fallout from her spectacular revenge on cheating husband Simon had left her life in tatters. Nearly 10 million people tuned in to watch that finale.

Now, in series three, Gemma is still a GP, still living in the same house, but on the cusp of something new. She has met someone, she is getting married, and things are finally looking up. Naturally, that cannot last. As the wedding approaches and guests gather, shadows from the past start creeping back in, threatening both her happiness and her reputation. Expect secrets, betrayals, and in true Doctor Foster fashion, quite possibly another dinner party from hell.

Suranne Jones said of her return: “When I got the call to ask if I wanted to return as Gemma Foster, I knew the time was right. We needed space from the first two series, and we needed Tom – Gemma and Simon’s runaway son – to return as an adult with questions. For me, this time around it’s about accountability and questioning – ‘can we ever truly sever ties with our past and the damage or traumas that haunt us, so we can fully move forward?’ Gemma and Simon have so much to unpick! It’s been an exciting time working with the brilliant Mike Bartlett again, and the team at Drama Republic, on the scripts and now I can’t wait to start filming.”

Writer, creator and executive producer Mike Bartlett added: “I always hoped that we’d get to tell the final part of Gemma’s story – which is about a woman seeking justice in an unfair world. That feels as relevant now as when Gemma first found a blonde hair on the scarf. It’s been a joy to team up once again with the hugely talented Drama Republic, the now very grown-up and brilliant Tom Taylor, the inimitable Bertie Carvel and of course, the incomparable Suranne Jones, to tell the final chapter of this story and revisit Parminster – where it turns out there’s still secrets, betrayals, vengeance and perhaps one last dinner party…”

The series is produced by Drama Republic (a Mediawan Group Company) and will be directed by John Hardwick (One Day, The Buccaneers), with Nige Watson (Killing Eve, The Assassin) as producer. Suranne Jones is also on board as executive producer alongside Bartlett, and Roanna Benn and Jude Liknaitzky for Drama Republic. BBC Studios is handling global distribution, with the Doctor Foster format having already been adapted in 15 territories worldwide.

Series one and two of Doctor Foster are available to stream on BBC iPlayer now if you fancy a rewatch before series three arrives.
