‘Law & Order: SVU’ Locked In For Season 28 As NBC Leaves ‘Law & Order’ And Others On The Bubble

by Dave Elliott

NBC has locked in Law & Order: SVUfor Season 28, although the story comes with a slightly strange wrinkle. While the network has now publicly confirmed the veteran drama will return for the 2026-27 season, trade reports suggest this was not actually a fresh renewal in the usual sense, but the previously unannounced second half of an earlier two-season deal.

That means the real headline here is less “surprise renewal” and more “NBC finally admitting ‘SVU’ was already safe.”

The long-running crime drama, led by Mariska Hargitay, remains the crown jewel of the franchise and continues to be one of NBC’s most reliable performers. With ‘Law & Order: Organized Crime’ now cancelled, it also leaves ‘SVU’ even more firmly positioned as the brand’s flagship series heading into next season.

According to Deadline, NBC renewed the show last year for two seasons, but only made one of those renewals public at the time. So while Season 28 is now official, it appears the decision itself may actually have been made some time ago. It is an odd way to handle one of the network’s biggest dramas, but it does at least remove any doubt about Olivia Benson’s future.

The bigger uncertainty now sits elsewhere on the NBC slate. The revived ‘Law & Order’ remains on the bubble alongside freshman dramas ‘The Hunting Party’ and ‘Brilliant Minds’, plus comedy ‘Stumble’. Final decisions are expected before NBC unveils its 2026-27 schedule in May, so a few more casualties could yet be on the way.

From a UK perspective, ‘SVU’ is the clearest one for viewers here, with Season 27 due to return on Sky Witness in May. The main ‘Law & Order’ airs in the UK on 5USA, although we are still waiting for Season 25 to turn up. ‘The Hunting Party’ also has a UK home on U&Alibi, while ‘Brilliant Minds’ and ‘Stumble’ currently have no UK broadcaster attached.

So yes, ‘SVU’ is safe, but this is one of those renewals that feels less like a dramatic rescue and more like NBC finally letting the audience in on information it was already sitting on, while the rest of the franchise and parts of NBC’s bubble slate remain in limbo.

Law & Order: SVU’ Season 27 returns in May 2026 on Sky Witness. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
