Geektown Radio Episode 500: The Great Geeky Hall Of Fame Pub Quiz

by Dave Elliott

After eleven years, countless renewals, cancellations, streaming rebrands, convention interviews, UK air date chaos, and far too many shows disappearing into the void, Geektown Radio has somehow reached Episode 500! To celebrate, we’re doing something a little different, with a special edition of the podcast: The Great Geeky Hall Of Fame Pub Quiz.

Joining me for this milestone episode are two regular Geektown voices, Matt and Gray, who go head-to-head in a fiercely competitive, entirely ridiculous, and occasionally educational quiz covering the many strange corners of Geektown history.

Geektown Radio officially launched on Tuesday, 20th January 2015, although Geektown podcasting had already begun before that with 32 interview podcasts. Since then, we’ve had the weekly show, specials, Geektown Behind The Scenes, Geektown Talks To, the Webby-nominated Geekstorians podcast, lots of convention coverage, and more streaming service nonsense than any reasonable person should have to track.

For Episode 500, Matt and Gray battle through a series of themed rounds, each linked to a wing of the completely unofficial Geektown Radio Hall Of Fame. Along the way, we cover the origins of the podcast, geek TV favourites, cancelled-too-soon classics, streaming chaos, gaming, reality TV, conventions, and the dangerous business of making predictions about an industry that seems determined to make everyone look foolish.

There are questions about classic genre shows, baffling streamer rebrands, painful cancellations, Geektown’s convention coverage, Dave’s alarming number of hours in Planet Zoo, Gray’s reality TV expertise, Matt’s inevitable gaming loyalties, and a final round dedicated to “shameful predictions” from the world of entertainment. Because no podcast should be allowed to reach 500 episodes without admitting that someone, somewhere, once said: “Netflix probably won’t cancel that.”

Across the episode, we also induct various shows, phrases, services and bits of Geektown history into the Hall Of Fame, including a final Founder’s Choice induction at the end of the show. No spoilers here, obviously, as half the fun is hearing Matt and Gray argue their cases before I make a completely fair and not-at-all arbitrary ruling.

This episode is also our final Geektown Radio before we take our usual summer break for a few weeks. The podcast will be back in around a month, but Geektown.co.uk will continue ticking along with the latest TV news, UK air dates, renewals, cancellations and all the usual updates. Geekstorians Season 3 will also continue to release during the break, so there will still be something to listen to while we’re away.

A massive thank you to everyone who has listened to Geektown Radio over the years, whether you’ve been here since the beginning, joined somewhere along the way, found us through the UK air dates page, or stumbled across us while Googling when a show was finally going to air over here at 2am. Episode 500 is a ridiculous milestone, and we genuinely could not have got here without you.
