‘The Assassin’ Season 2 Trailer Sees Keeley Hawes & Freddie Highmore Reunite For Another Deadly Family Holiday

by Dave Elliott

Prime Video has released the trailer for the second season of ‘The Assassin‘, confirming the action-packed thriller starring Keeley Hawes (The Bodyguard, Line of Duty) and Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor, Bates Motel) will return to UK and Irish screens in November. All six episodes are set to arrive together, so at least viewers won’t have to spend six weeks worrying about whether this particular family reunion will end in a body count.

When we last saw Julie and her son Edward, the pair had survived a rather eventful trip across Europe, uncovering uncomfortable truths about Julie’s former career as a professional killer and putting their already complicated relationship through the wringer. You might think that surviving all that would bring a mother and son closer together. Apparently not.

The Honeymoon From Hell

Season 2 finds Julie and Edward estranged once more after a mysterious falling-out following their previous adventure. Julie has slipped back into her old line of work while also attempting to navigate the dating scene, which sounds like an interesting combination of potential red flags.

Meanwhile, Edward has married Kayla, played by Shalom Brune-Franklin (Baby Reindeer, The Tourist), and is hoping for a dream honeymoon. Unfortunately, someone clearly failed to tell the criminal underworld that newlyweds generally prefer beaches and cocktails to kidnappings. When Kayla is taken hostage, Edward has little choice but to call on the one person he knows who might be able to help: his mother.

“If anyone can get this done, it’s your mother,” Edward is told in the new trailer. And so Julie and Edward reluctantly reunite for another adventure involving high-speed car chases, international criminals and a trip into Spain’s corrupt underworld. Alongside the danger, they’ll also have to work out whether there’s any chance of repairing their increasingly battered mother-son relationship, preferably without killing each other first.

Who’s Returning, And Who’s New?

Joining the returning stars is Devon Terrell (It’s What’s Inside, Barry), who reprises his role as Ezra, Kayla’s ambitious and unpredictable brother. New additions include Arnaud Bindard (Emily in Paris), Natalia Tena (Game of Thrones), Boris Van Severen (Baptiste), Jacqueline Boatswain (Bridgerton) and Monic Hendrickx (Penoza).

Also joining the six-part series are Karl El-Santos, Mehdi Regragui, Casimiro Aguza, Tony Corvillo, Amin Hamada and Lolo Herrero. Quite a sizeable collection of new faces, although the trailer isn’t especially keen to tell us which of them Julie will be shooting at.

Behind the scenes, brothers Harry and Jack Williams return as writers and creators. Their previous television work includes ‘The Tourist’ and ‘The Missing’, so they’re certainly familiar with putting characters through a thoroughly miserable time in beautiful locations.

The drama is produced by Two Brothers Pictures, with Terry McDonough (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Killing Eve) directing the first three episodes and Sarah O’Gorman (The Witcher, The Last Kingdom) handling the remaining three. Although much of the action takes the characters to Spain, filming for the series took place in Malta.

The series also has a slightly unusual international distribution arrangement. Prime Video is its home in the UK and Ireland, while Stan carries it in Australia and ZDF has the rights in Germany. The first season aired on AMC+ in the US, although a US premiere date for Season 2 has not been confirmed in the announcements so far.

If the trailer is anything to go by, viewers can expect another lively mix of action, dark humour and family dysfunction. Other people might try a weekend away to rebuild a strained relationship. Julie and Edward apparently prefer taking on an international criminal organisation. Whatever works for you, I suppose.

‘The Assassin‘ Season 2 premieres Friday, 6th November 2026 on Prime Video in the UK and Ireland.
