Class is nearly back in session, although this time the students know they’re heading towards graduation a little sooner than expected. Paramount+ has announced that ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘ will return for its second and final season in March 2027, with the UK getting the new episodes at the same time as the US. The announcement came during the Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic Con, alongside two intriguing guest stars and a batch of first-look photos.
Bill Nighy (Living, About Time) and Rosemarie DeWitt (Untamed, The Staircase) are joining the cast, and both will be playing characters with some rather important family connections. Because apparently navigating life at Starfleet Academy wasn’t complicated enough without the parents getting involved.
Meet the Parents, Starfleet Style
Bill Nighy will play Nyk Ake, the estranged father of Chancellor Nahla Ake, played by Holly Hunter (Succession, The Piano). That’s an interesting bit of casting, not least because Nahla has generally had quite enough on her plate trying to keep a school full of would-be Starfleet officers from turning every lesson into an interstellar incident.
Exactly why Nyk is turning up, or what has kept him and his daughter apart, hasn’t been revealed. However, given how central Nahla has been to the story, bringing her family into the picture suggests the final season could dig further into her past rather than leaving all the personal drama to the cadets.
Rosemarie DeWitt, meanwhile, takes on the role of Laytha Sadal, the First Lady of Betazed and mother of Tarima Sadal, played by Zoë Steiner (Significant Others). That adds a potentially interesting political dimension to proceedings, especially as the new season will feature some delicate diplomatic negotiations. Whether Laytha is there to help, complicate matters or do a bit of both remains to be seen.
The newly released pictures give us our first look at both characters, including Nyk sharing a scene with Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager) as The Doctor. Bill Nighy and The Doctor in the same room? That’s a pairing which certainly has our attention.
Second Year, Bigger Problems
The new season picks up with the cadets entering their second year aboard the USS Athena, and it doesn’t sound as though the curriculum is getting any easier. Friendships, relationships, leadership and even their ideas of right and wrong will be tested as the students tackle new rivalries, difficult diplomatic situations and a fiercely competitive academy-wide tournament.
Then there’s the arrival of a mysterious new cadet whose very existence raises questions with potential consequences well beyond the classroom. It’s a suitably Star Trek sort of problem: just when everyone thinks they’re dealing with ordinary student drama, something turns up that could affect a rather larger chunk of the galaxy.
The first-look images also feature Caleb, Genesis, Darem and Tarima, giving fans another glimpse of the younger characters as their stories continue. There’s still plenty of room for romance, rivalry and questionable decision-making, even if the Federation might prefer its future officers to demonstrate slightly better judgement.
One Final Year at the Academy
Of course, the slightly awkward elephant in the ready room is that this really is the end. Paramount+ and CBS Studios confirmed back in March 2026 that ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ would not continue beyond Season 2, despite the second season having already completed filming. That means we’re getting another year with these cadets, but not the longer run that the Academy setting might once have suggested.
The series was created to explore a different corner of the Star Trek universe, combining the usual Federation-sized challenges with the friendships, rivalries and growing pains of a new generation of officers. It hasn’t been everyone’s preferred flavour of Trek, but there is something a little frustrating about opening up that setting, then calling time after only two seasons.
For now, there’s no specific day in March attached to the premiere announcement, nor any indication of exactly how the show’s final episode will leave its characters. Still, between two new family members, a mysterious arrival and a few more opportunities for The Doctor to dispense wisdom, the Academy appears determined to make its last term a busy one.
‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘ Season 2 premieres March 2027 on Paramount+ in the UK and US.
