‘Daddy Issues’ Series 3 Adds Sian Gibson, Neil Morrissey & More As Filming Begins On Final Run

by Dave Elliott

The BBC comedy ‘Daddy Issues‘ is back in production, with Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education, The White Lotus) and David Morrissey (The Walking Dead, Sherwood) returning for one last round of questionable parenting decisions and spectacularly awkward family situations.

Filming on the third and final series is now underway in and around Stockport, and the BBC has revealed a rather impressive selection of guest stars joining the pair, including Sian Gibson (Car Share), Neil Morrissey (Men Behaving Badly), Anthony Welsh (The Flatshare) and Shobna Gulati (Coronation Street). And yes, that’s two Morrisseys on one show. Spare a thought for whoever is keeping track of the call sheets.

For anyone who hasn’t caught up, ‘Daddy Issues’ follows Gemma, whose unexpected pregnancy forced her to rely on her well-meaning but deeply hopeless dad, Malcolm. Two series later, the pair have somehow managed to get through new parenthood, romantic disasters and their complicated family relationships, while proving that becoming a parent doesn’t necessarily mean becoming an adult.

New faces, new romances and probably more terrible decisions

The final series picks up 18 months after the events of Series 2. Gemma and Malcolm have settled into something resembling a routine. Little Sadie is thriving at nursery, Gemma has been promoted at the salon, and things might finally be looking up.

Naturally, this cannot last.

When Gemma returns after two weeks away, she discovers Malcolm has lost his keys, their flat has developed a leak, and the police are standing at the door. So, pretty much business as usual. And just when Gemma might be getting her life together, a promising romance sends her into another complicated tangle of lies, leaving her needing Malcolm’s help. Could he actually be turning into the responsible adult in this relationship? Stranger things have happened.

That new romantic interest is Avery, a video game designer played by Anthony Welsh (Bob Marley: One Love, The Flatshare). Given Gemma’s track record, we’ll reserve judgement on whether this is finally a relationship that works out.

Sian Gibson (The Power of Parker, Car Share) joins as Juno, the unhinged sister of Rita, while Neil Morrissey (Men Behaving Badly, Line of Duty) plays Ellis, Malcolm’s newfound friend. Because if there’s one thing Malcolm needs, it’s another person who might encourage his more questionable ideas.

Also joining are Shobna Gulati (Hullraisers, Coronation Street) as sultry new neighbour Odette, Liam Williams (Ladhood, Everyone Else Burns) as Rita’s put-upon boyfriend, Sophie Winkleman (Sanditon, Wild Cherry) as campsite owner Mary, and Seb Cardinal (Cardinal Burns, Sally4Ever) as the mysterious Silas. Quite what makes Silas so mysterious remains to be seen, but this is probably not a show where secrets stay buried for long.

Familiar faces return for the final chapter

Alongside Aimee Lou Wood and David Morrissey, the returning cast includes Sarah Hadland (Miranda) as Rita, David Fynn (Undateable) as Derek, Taj Atwal (Line of Duty) as Cherry, and Sharon Rooney (My Mad Fat Diary) as Catherine.

It’s a sizeable ensemble for the comedy’s farewell, but the heart of the show remains Gemma and Malcolm’s wonderfully dysfunctional father-daughter relationship. As Gemma tackles new relationships and the demands of raising Sadie, Malcolm might finally have learned a thing or two about being a grown-up. Then again, Malcolm has already lost his keys, their flat is leaking, and the police have shown up, so perhaps we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves.

The six-part, 30-minute-per-episode series is created and written by Danielle Ward (Brassic), with George Kane (How to Get to Heaven from Belfast) directing and Andrew Harvey (Avoidance) producing. Fudge Park Productions makes the comedy for BBC Three and BBC iPlayer, with Wood, Morrissey, Ward, Damon Beesley and Phil Gilbert among the executive producers.

The comedy has been a strong performer for the BBC, with its first series becoming BBC Three’s biggest comedy launch since the beginning of 2022, while Series 2 was the channel’s top scripted title of 2025. It’s a shame this is the final outing, but at least there are six more episodes of Gemma and Malcolm trying, and usually failing, to keep their lives under control.

‘Daddy Issues‘ Series 3 is due to premiere in 2027 on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer, although an exact date has yet to be announced.
