Apple TV Renews ‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’ For Season 2 Following Critical Acclaim

by Dave Elliott

Apple TV has decided there is still plenty more pleasure to be had, renewing ‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed‘ for a second season. The darkly comedic thriller, starring Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black, The Monkey) and Jake Johnson (New Girl, Mythic Quest), earned strong reviews after its May debut, and Apple is now bringing it back for another run.

For anyone who missed it the first time around, the series follows Paula Sanders (Maslany), a newly divorced mum whose life is already complicated enough before she becomes convinced she has witnessed a crime. Rather than leave the investigating to the professionals, Paula starts digging herself, and promptly finds herself tangled up in a decidedly unpleasant web of blackmail, murder and youth football. Because apparently a custody battle and an identity crisis weren’t enough to be getting on with.

As Paula tries to work out what she really saw, her amateur detective work threatens to uncover a much bigger conspiracy. At the same time, she is attempting to put her family back together and figure out who she is after her marriage ends. It is an unusual combination of domestic drama, conspiracy thriller and black comedy, with the everyday indignities of parenting rubbing shoulders with some considerably more dangerous problems.

A Second Season, And A Title With An Unlikely Origin

The show was created by David J. Rosen (Sugar, Hunters), who also serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer. He had a rather entertaining explanation for the name when reacting to the renewal.

“We are delighted to continue the story of ‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’ and deeply grateful to Apple and our incredible cast and crew,” said David J. Rosen, creator and showrunner. “This is all pretty amazing for a show whose title came from a spam email.”

Which, frankly, makes the title even better. Most of us would delete that email without a second thought. Rosen managed to turn it into an Apple TV series with two seasons.

The renewal follows a strong critical reception for the first ten episodes. The debut season currently holds a 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers particularly impressed by Maslany‘s central performance and the way the show balances its darker twists with comedy. It is the sort of series where the mystery keeps pulling you forward, while Paula’s increasingly complicated personal life threatens to derail everything.

Who Else Stars In The Series?

Alongside Maslany and Johnson, the first-season cast includes Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus, The Last of Us), Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness, Nine Perfect Strangers), Brandon Flynn (13 Reasons Why), Jessy Hodges (Barry), Jon Michael Hill (Elementary), Charlie Hall (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Kiarra Hamagami Goldberg (Invasion, Charmed) and Nola Wallace (The Strangers: Chapter 2).

Behind the scenes, ‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’ comes from Apple Studios and Counterpart Studios. David Gordon Green (The Righteous Gemstones, Mythic Quest) directs and executive produces, while Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon developed the series and serve as executive producers, alongside Bard Dorros for Anonymous Content.

Apple hasn’t announced a production schedule, episode count or premiere window for season two, and there is no confirmed list of returning cast members yet. For now, the good news is simply that the story is continuing. If you haven’t caught the show, all ten episodes of season one are already available to stream on Apple TV in the UK, so there is plenty of time to get acquainted with Paula and her spectacularly complicated life.

‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed‘ Season 2 is coming to Apple TV. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
