‘Mayor of Kingstown’ Sets January Premiere For Fifth And Final Season As First-Look Images Arrive

by Dave Elliott

The end is approaching for ‘Mayor of Kingstown‘, as Paramount+ confirms the hit crime drama will return for its fifth and final season in January 2027, with the premiere landing on the same day in the UK and US. The streamer has also released a batch of first-look images teasing the closing chapter of Mike McLusky’s increasingly complicated life.

The final season will run for eight episodes, giving the series one last chance to resolve the seemingly endless cycle of violence, corruption and deeply questionable decisions in the fictional Michigan town. And, given how things have gone for Mike over the past four seasons, it’s probably safe to assume his retirement plan won’t involve quietly taking up gardening.

Created by Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, the drama follows the McLusky family, who operate as power brokers in a town where prisons are the main industry. At the centre is Mike, played by Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), a fixer trying to maintain an uneasy peace between law enforcement, inmates, criminal gangs and just about everyone else with a gun and a grudge. It has never been an especially relaxing job, and the final season looks unlikely to change that.

Warning: Season 4 spoilers below.

The story picks up after the murder of Tracy and the revenge taken against Callahan by Mike and his brother Kyle, played by Taylor Handley (The O.C.). Unfortunately for Mike, those events have attracted the attention of someone who isn’t particularly interested in Kingstown’s usual arrangements. FBI agent Russell Hardy, played by David Morse (The Green Mile), arrives looking for the supposedly fugitive Callahan, and starts digging into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

Hardy is described as a genuine lawman, which is rather bad news for someone whose entire career has involved finding ways around the law when it suits him. As the investigation gathers pace, Hardy threatens to expose Mike’s secrets and the less-than-legal deals holding Kingstown’s fragile balance of power together. In a place where practically everyone has something to hide, an FBI agent asking sensible questions could prove more dangerous than another gang war.

Also returning is Edie Falco (The Sopranos) as prison warden Nina Hobbs, alongside Laura Benanti (The Gilded Age), Hugh Dillon (Flashpoint), Tobi Bamtefa (The Witcher) and Derek Webster (9-1-1: Lone Star). The returning cast also includes Necar Zadegan (NCIS: New Orleans), Nichole Galicia (Django Unchained) and Lennie James (The Walking Dead). Between the established players and Hardy’s arrival, there are plenty of people left to complicate Mike’s final attempt to keep the town from tearing itself apart.

The new first-look images offer an early glimpse of the final season, although Paramount+ is keeping the bigger surprises under wraps for now. With the series officially ending after this run, the question is no longer simply whether Mike can restore order, but whether someone who has spent so long trapped in Kingstown’s power struggles can ever really escape them.

Behind the scenes, Sheridan and Dillon remain executive producers alongside Renner and others, with Dave Erickson returning as showrunner. The series is produced by Paramount Television Studios, 101 Studios and Bosque Ranch Productions. All four previous seasons are currently available to stream on Paramount+, so there’s time for a catch-up before the endgame begins. Just don’t expect much in the way of cheerful viewing.

‘Mayor of Kingstown‘ Season 5 premieres Friday, 15th January 2027 on Paramount+.
