Channel 4 Is Coming To Disney+ UK In 2027, But Why Watch It There When It’s Already Free?

Channel 4 and Disney have announced a rather interesting new partnership which will see the British broadcaster’s live channel, along with hundreds of hours of programmes, arrive on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland early next year. And, perhaps most surprisingly, some new Channel 4 shows will launch on both platforms simultaneously!

The landmark deal means Disney+ subscribers will get access to Channel 4’s main HD television channel, a selection of its existing catalogue, and multiple new series each year, all included in their existing subscription at no additional cost.

It’s a major move for both companies, although it does raise one rather obvious question: Why would you watch Channel 4 on Disney+ when you can already watch it for free?

What’s Coming To Disney+?

The agreement will introduce a dedicated Channel 4-branded section within Disney+, using the same familiar navigation and streaming experience as the rest of the platform.

Alongside the live HD channel, Disney+ will offer hundreds of hours of Channel 4 programming, including scripted dramas, comedies, documentaries and reality television.

Some of the confirmed titles include ‘Big Mood’, ‘Tip Toe’ and ’24 Hours in A&E’, alongside a selection of brand-new productions which will arrive on Disney+ at the same time as their Channel 4 premieres.

Among those are ‘Maya’, a darkly comic thriller starring Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us) as part of a mother-and-daughter duo living in witness protection. The series is written, directed by and also stars Daisy Haggard (Back to Life).

There’s also ‘Stepping Up’, a new comedy led by Denise Welch (Coronation Street), following an overenthusiastic stepdad whose attempts to navigate his new blended family result in plenty of chaos.

Reality fans won’t be left out either, with ‘Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins’ also confirmed as one of the programmes receiving a simultaneous release.

Further titles and the full extent of the on-demand catalogue will be announced closer to launch.

But Why Watch Channel 4 On Disney+ When It’s Already Free?

This is arguably the most interesting part of the announcement, at least from a viewer’s perspective.

After all, Channel 4 is a free-to-air broadcaster. Its programmes are already available through its own streaming service, without requiring a monthly subscription. So why would someone pay for Disney+ to watch something they can already access for nothing?

For existing Disney+ customers, convenience is certainly one answer. Rather than jumping between different apps, viewers will be able to find more of their favourite British programmes alongside their Disney, Marvel, Star Wars and other entertainment content.

There’s also the potential discovery factor. Someone browsing Disney+ might stumble across a Channel 4 drama or comedy they would never have thought to seek out on the broadcaster’s own streaming service.

But there’s another possibility which could make the arrangement considerably more attractive: advertising.

Channel 4’s free streaming service includes adverts, and viewers who want to remove most advertising from on-demand programmes currently need a separate Channel 4+ subscription.

Disney+, meanwhile, offers Standard and Premium subscription tiers marketed as providing advert-free films and television series.

If Channel 4’s on-demand programmes are included in that advert-free experience, it could give existing Disney+ subscribers a genuine advantage over watching through Channel 4’s free service.

However, there’s an important catch.

Neither company has confirmed whether Channel 4 programmes will be advert-free on Disney+’s more expensive subscription tiers. Disney’s existing terms also allow advertising within live channels and certain third-party content, even for subscribers on its advert-free plans.

That means viewers shouldn’t expect the live Channel 4 feed to suddenly lose its commercial breaks simply because they’re watching through Disney+. Whether the on-demand catalogue will offer a different experience remains to be seen.

It’s a detail worth clarifying before launch, because it could make quite a difference to how useful the new arrangement actually is.

So What’s In It For Channel 4 And Disney?

From the broadcasters’ perspective, the deal makes rather more immediate sense.

For Channel 4, it’s about getting its programmes in front of audiences who might not routinely watch traditional television or open its own streaming app. Rather than insisting viewers come to Channel 4, the broadcaster is taking its content to where those viewers already spend their time.

Channel 4 Chief Executive Priya Dogra explained:

“We’re thrilled to be working with Disney+ to give audiences even more ways to discover and enjoy Channel 4’s brilliant shows. Channel 4 is home to some of the UK and Ireland’s most talked about and trusted programming, and this new service will help those shows reach viewers in new places. This exciting step shows how collaboration between broadcasters and streamers can create more choice and value for audiences.”

For Disney+, meanwhile, the agreement adds a substantial collection of recognisable British television to its catalogue without having to commission every programme itself.

It also builds on Disney’s wider strategy of working with established European broadcasters to increase the amount of local programming available to subscribers. Disney+ already has a content-sharing arrangement with ITVX, and the Channel 4 partnership takes that idea considerably further by including an entire live television channel.

And crucially, this isn’t about Channel 4 abandoning its own platform or moving its programming behind a Disney+ paywall. Viewers will still be able to access Channel 4 through its existing free-to-air and streaming services.

Instead, it’s another example of how the boundaries between traditional broadcasters and subscription streaming platforms are becoming increasingly blurred.

For viewers, having more places to watch the same programmes is rarely a bad thing. Whether there’s a compelling reason to choose Disney+ over the free alternative will depend on the finer details, particularly those advertising arrangements.

Still, the idea of having Channel 4 sitting alongside Disney, Marvel and Star Wars in the same streaming app is certainly an interesting development. Now we just need to find out whether watching a Channel 4 drama on Disney+ will spare us from sitting through the adverts!

Channel 4 launches on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland in early 2027. An exact launch date has not yet been announced.
