Set in 1860s Birmingham, ‘The Cadburys’ tells the story of the family behind one of Britain’s most famous chocolate brands, long before their name became synonymous with Dairy Milk and Creme Eggs.
When brothers Richard (Toby Regbo) and George Cadbury (Harry Gilby) inherit responsibility for their family’s failing cocoa business, they set out to transform it into a confectionery empire. But their contrasting personalities, competing ambitions and complicated relationships threaten to derail their dreams before they’ve even got started.
Meanwhile, their sister Maria (Jessica Barden) struggles to find her place within the family business, particularly when she falls for Francis Fry (Ben Hardy), a member of their biggest rival chocolate-making family. Richard also finds romance with Elizabeth Adlington (Poppy Gilbert), adding another layer of personal drama to the family’s business ambitions.
Inspired by Deborah Cadbury’s book Chocolate Wars, the six-part drama mixes family rivalries, forbidden romance and entrepreneurial ambition as the Cadburys take their first steps towards becoming a household name.
