Riverdale, CW’s hotly anticipated comic book adaptation from Flash/Arrow/Supergirl/Legends creator Greg Berlanti will be coming to Netflix UK on Friday 27th January 2017 it has been announced.

Described as “Archie Comics via Twin Peaks”, this rather darker take on the source material sees K.J. Apa (Shortland Street) take the lead as Archie Andrews, the ‘all-American teen.’ He returns to school after the summer break to a Riverdale still reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom. The summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music – not follow in his dad’s footsteps – despite the sudden end of his illicit affair with Riverdale’s young music teacher, and musical mentor, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel).

Archie turns to singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) for help, but she’s too focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous Pussycats, to lend any advice. Add to this his fractured friendship with budding writer and fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) and it’s all weighing heavily on the young lad’s mind.

Archie isn’t the only one suffering teen-angst, as girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves (which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother Alice (Mädchen Amick)) aren’t the only thing in her way… Enter new student Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes). Recently arrived from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), she finds there is an undeniable spark between her and Archie, but avoids making a play for him, as she doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty.

Rounding out the group, there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)… Riverdale’s Queen Bee, who is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty, and Veronica. But Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own… What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason?

Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows…

Riverdale will premiere in the UK less than 24hrs after the US, Friday 27th January 2017 on Netflix.
