Arrested Development movie & new tv show!

This was a bit unexpected but superb news!

We’d been hearing stories of an Arrested Development movie being made for a number of years. That made sense, after the popular TV show was cancelled, they wanted to do a film to round off the story. However, it seems that there are not only plans for a movie, but also a limited 1 new season run of the Arrested Development TV series as a build up to the movie.

Arrested Development creator Mitchell Hurwitz says that the idea would be to do 9 or 10 episodes, each revolving primarily around 1 character. The idea came to him whilst writing the screenplay for the movie. As there had been a 5yr gap between the movie and TV show, there was a bunch of back story to fill in, which meant “We were halfway through the movie before the characters came together.” By running the TV series first, it would allow the movie to jump in with all the characters in one place.

Speaking at a cast reunion at New Yorker Festival on Sunday, Jason Bateman added: “There’s business left to be done, but creatively we are all on board and have a very specific plan about how it would come out and what we would do and when we would shoot it. I think we’re targeting next summer to shoot it.” If that happens, the planned release date would be early 2013.

The are a few ‘ifs’ in there, but Hurwitz reckons there about “80% of the way to the answer”, which is no mean feat. They still need to find somewhere to air the tv series, as it not guaranteed it would be on it’s old home at Fox, but the team have apparently been in talks with Showtime and Netflix about possible deals.

Given Jason Bateman and Michael Cera ever expanding movie careers, i was wondering if they’d ever manage to pull off the movie, but it’s sounding increasingly likely we may not only get a movie, but a tv show too!
