5 Actors Who Are Also Really Clever!

by Dave Elliott

Sometimes actors are portrayed as being not much more than an animated props who are fed lines and told where to move to. However, there are a growing number of them that are way more intelligent than the characters they play would have you believe…

Ken Jeong

5. Ken Jeong (The Hangover, Community)

When you think of Ken Jeong, the comedian and actor who brought the terrifyingly deranged personas of Mr Chow (The Hangover) and Senor Ben Chang (Community) to life, you may not imagine him as an intellectual. But the man who burst forth naked from the trunk of a car and onto our screens is in fact a doctor, born out of a High IQ Club in school and an undergraduate degree from the Ivy League academy Duke University.

He went on to achieve his medical degree and go on to complete his Internal Medicine residency – but after seeing his delivery skills in as the burnt-out doctor in Knocked Up, would you want him as your physician?

Masi Oka

4. Masi Oka (Hawaii Five-0, Heroes)

From playing Hiro Nakamura in Heroes, to his current role as the loveable, but slight off-the-wall, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Max Bergman in Hawaii Five-0, you could be forgiven for thinking that Masi was just another jobbing actor… What’s not as well know is that he has an reported IQ of 180, and a talented visual effects artist,  having worked at Industrial Light & Magic on the Star Wars prequels.

He actually move to ILM’s LA office so he could pursuit acting whilst still working as an effects artist, and was still consulting for them whilst working on Heroes in 2006.

3. Ashton Kutcher (Two And A Half Men, That 70’s Show)

Kutcher is soon to be seen playing Steve Jobs in an upcoming biopic, and taking a look at his background, that’s not as strange a choice as you may have first thought! It’s easy to play dumb, it’s cathartic – the thrill Ashon must get from making a fool of himself or ‘punking’ someone, us normal people would have to hit the jackpot on slots at Jackpot Capital Online, or beat all the red lights on the way to work to feel that high. But for those more intelligent than us… which you may be surprised to find out, Kutcher most likely is… the need for some ‘primal scream therapy’ (i.e. the ability to just go nuts) is a really useful stress reliever.

He may have made a living out of playing pretty clueless pretty boy types, but Kutcher was actually majoring in biochemical engineering at University of Iowa when he was discovered by a talent scout. He’s since set up a venture capital fund to invest in tech start-ups, and made a fortune investing in new technology. He even hosts his own tech innovation summits!

 James Woods

2. James Woods (Nixon, The Simpsons, Family Guy)

Family Guy has a number of on-going jokes about James Woods, one of which being the school in the show is called James Woods High. But that particular gag actually isn’t as silly as it sounds. James Woods is literally (and i do mean literally!) a genius, with an IQ of 180.

After scoring 800 on the maths SAT (UK people – thats really really high!), he then went to MIT to study political science, before dropping out to pursue acting.

1. Natalie Portman (Star Wars, V for Vendetta)

Not only is she stunningly beautiful, but Miss Portman is also incredibly smart.

She had a 4.0 GPA in high school (for UK people, thats basically a straight A student), and went on to graduate Harvard with a degree in psychology. She’s fluent in 5 languages, studied graduate courses in Hebrew at the University of Jerusalem, and has co-authored 2 published scientific papers.

If you ever want a definition of beauty and brains, Natalie Portman is it!
