Peter Capaldi get the keys to the Tardis as The 12th Doctor!
Well this is somewhat of a shock. For the first time, the bookies got it right! The Thick of It’s Peter Capaldi has been cast as Matt Smith’s successor as The 12th Doctor in Doctor Who!
Peter is of course best know as Malcolm Tucker in Armando Iannucci’s The Thick Of It, but he’s previously appeared in Doctor Who as Caecilius in The Fires of Pompeii, and also popped up in Torchwood as Permanent Secretary John Frobisher.
Like David Tennant, he’s a Scot, and also the oldest actor to take on the role since William Harnell, which in the shows 50th Anniversary year seems rather appropriate. When Steven Moffat was first looking to cast the Doctor, he always said he envisioned someone older, but Matt nailed the role, so it’s not unsurprising it went to an older actor this time around. It’ll be interesting to see if he tempers down the accent and plays him as English like David, or if we get our first Scottish sounding Doctor!
So what are your thoughts? Good choice? Bad choice? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
Dave has over 20 years experience in the digital industry, and is founder and editor of Geektown. Obviously a huge geek himself, he can often be found in front of the latest tv show or movie, on various video games, or with his head in a comic book.
Think he’ll be brilliant at it. I still remember him as the Angel Islington from the TV production of Neverwhere back in the 90s. Some of that otherworldyness in his interpretation of the Doctor I hope.
Neither Peter Capaldi nor Steven Moffat have particularly strong accents. He’d be perfectly accessible if he spoke normally. I think it is tremendous that they’ve gone for someone over 40 (over 50 even). We don’t need all our heroes to be teenagers and 20-somethings.
However, as one of the talking heads highlighted, most importantly, the Doctor is British.
Excellent choice.
Actually, to be accurate, he wouldn’t be tne first Scottish sounding Doctor, that wad Sylvester McCoy.
I love Malcolm Tucker so I am happy Peter’s the new Doctor but, I must admit I am surprised they went with such a mature actor.
Good luck to Peter I hope he turns out to be a great Doctor.
