Whilst we were all sleeping, FX channel in the US dropped the trailer for the 3rd season of The Strain, which airs on W (the channel formally know as Watch) in the UK.
The show was created by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, and based on their series of novels by the same name. It takes place in a New York which has been infected by a mysterious virus that has all the hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. Head of the CDC, Dr. Ephraim “Eph” Goodweather (Corey Stoll – House of Cards), puts together a small band of people to help fight the spread of the virus, and thwart ‘The Master’ who is controlling it. Other cast includes David Bradley (Harry Potter films, An Adventure in Space and Time, Game of Thrones), Mía Maestro (Alias, The Twilight Saga), Kevin Durand (Legion, Lost, Robin Hood), Jonathan Hyde (Titanic, Spooks), Richard Sammel (Inglourious Basterds, Casino Royale), and Rupert Penry-Jones (Spooks, Whitechapel).
The show had a rather long history making it to screen. Originally pitched by del Toro in 2006 to Fox, he was turned down, so decided to team up with Hogan to turn the script into a novel. The book, and subsequent comic book series became such a success that, 3 novels later, when they pitched it again, this time to FX, the network snapped it up!
The new season of The Strain starts in the US on August 28, which is a little later than usual, I suspect partly because this season is 10 episodes not 13. W (aka Watch) are usually only about a month behind, so we’d expect it to land in the UK some time in the Autumn.
