HBO Releases Handy Game Of Thrones Infographic That Confirms R+L=J

by Dave Elliott

Will season 6 now over, HBO have posted this handy infographic that will help you keep track of which characters in Game Of Thrones is related to each other, and also solidly confirms what we all suspected from season 6 finale. Obviously SPOILERS, but it’s Wednesday for heavens sake, if you’ve not watched it yet, what are you doing with your life. ;)

So, the long held fan theory was that Rhaegar Targaryen, son of Aerys II Targaryen, The Mad King, abducted Lyanna Stark, sister of Ned Stark, and produced the baby Jon Snow. That was pretty much confirmed in the finale during Brann’s vision, although we didn’t get to hear Rhaegar actually named as the father. The graphic now confirmed that, and also seems to say she was indeed abducted, and didn’t run away with him, as had also been suggested by fans.

Lyanna Stark had been engaged to marry Robert Baratheon, but during a tourney hosted at Harrenhal, Rhaegar rode past his own wife, Princess Elia Martel, and presented his winner’s crown of winter roses to Lyanna, much to the shock of the court. It was some time after that, when Rhaegar abducted Lyanna, and fled to the Tower of Joy in Dorne, creating the catalyst for ‘Robert’s Rebellion’.

Ned tracks Lyanna to the Tower, only to find her dying, and holding the young baby, whom Ned agrees to raise as his own bastard son. This is to stop Robert from killing him, as being half Targaryen, the boy would have a claim to the throne.

Interestingly, there are a couple of people on there conspicuously absent. Both Cersei and Tyrion aren’t represented on that chart. That could just be because of a lack of space… Or could it be that one of those characters has a parentage they don’t yet which to reveal? After all, there are 3 dragons on the show, but only 2 Targaryens we currently know about – Daenerys and Jon. Could a third be hiding in the Lannister line? Tyrion Lannister has always been a bit of an outsider, and those dragons really didn’t seem to mind him too much when he went to release their chains…

All should be revealed when Game Of Thrones returns next year!
