Floriana Lima has landed the role of Maggie Sawyer on Supergirl next season Geektown has learnt. She will join Melissa Benoist, who played the titular superhero, along with fellow newcomers Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf), who will be playing Superman, and Lynda Carter (the original 70’s Wonder Woman) who will be playing the US President.
Sawyer is an interesting character in the DC universe, as she was one of the first openly gay characters in mainstream comic books. She first appeared in an issue of Superman in April 1987 as captain of the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit, a special branch of the Metropolis PD that deals with super-powered problems. She also worked at Gotham PD, where she had a relationship with Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, although in the recent Rebirth reboot, she is back working in Metropolis.
Floriana Lima is probably best know for her role in The Mob Doctor, although you may have seen her pop up in episodes of House, Hawaii Five-0, Franklin & Bash, and CSI.
Supergirl will see a number of changes for it’s 2nd season, with it moving production to Vancouver to join the other DC shows which also shoot up there. We’ve been told we may see a little less of Cat Grant next season, as Calista Flockhart is not moving to Vancouver for the entire season, and only coming up for short blocks of shooting.
To help cover this, Ian Gomez (Cougar Town, The Drew Carey Show, Felicity) has been added as Snapper Carr, the ‘sharp-witted newsman’ who is hired by Cat to ‘push CatCo reporters to dig deeper in the pursuit of excellence’. Snapper also happens to have ties to the Justice League of America.
All four of the DC shows – Arrow, The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow and Supergirl are due back in the Autumn.
