Jimmy Olsen Gets A New Role On Supergirl

With Supergirl switching networks in the US, there are a number of changes coming for the cast in the upcoming season. As has happened in some of the other DC-Berlantiverse shows, they’ve taken a character from the comic books and moved them around a little for the DC TV universe. In this case it’s Supergirl’s buddy Jimmy Olsen getting a new role, and becoming more than just CatCo’s photographer…

James (as he prefers to be called) Olsen takes on the mantle of a classic DC Comics hero, Guardian, and join Supergirl’s fight to protect National City.

“James has a pretty big turn coming up,” comments Supergirl EP Andrew Kreisberg. “These next few episodes are going to make him realize that being a photographer is not enough for him, so he’s going to go on a pretty exciting career trajectory that we’re pretty pumped by. James is going to decide that he can no longer sit back and be a sidekick, so he’s going to become a vigilante. He’s going to become Guardian, complete with the shield, which is going to cause a massive problem in his relationship with Kara, because he’s not going to tell her.”

In the comic books, Guardian is Jim Harper, a Metropolis police officer who becomes the vigilante to chase down criminals the law couldn’t prosecute in his day job. Harper has actually already appeared in Supergirl, played by Warehouse 13’s Eddie McClintock, so it was a bit of a surprise when they announced Olsen would be donning the Guardian outfit. It does however make sense in the DC TV universe that Olsen would want to find a way to help Kara out, rather than just taking photos.
