Emerald City Trailer Lands – Dorothy & Scarecrow Sitting In A Tree…

by Dave Elliott

I think it’s fair to say, when L. Frank Baum wrote his various tales from the land of Oz, I doubt he envisaged a version where Dorothy would have her tongue down the throat of Scarecrow… But this is 2016, and lets be honest, it’s probably not the wackiest thing you’ve seen in this crazy year…

Emerald City is NBC’s new sexier Game Of Thrones-esque take on The Wizard Of Oz, and sees a 20-year-old Dorothy Gale (Adria Arjona – True Detective) swept up in a tornado and transported to another world. In this mystical land she meets it’s all-powerful ruler (Vincent D’Onofrio – Daredevil), who has outlawed magic, and faces not only the wrath of a growing cauldron of witches, but a looming disaster brought on by a mythical force…

Helping Dorothy navigate this strange new land is Toto… her faithful trained K-9 police dog, and the, apparently often shirtless, Scarecrow (Oliver-Jackson Cohen – Dracula, Mr Selfridge).

The road to production has been less ‘yellow brick’ and rather more ‘mud track with potholes’ for Emerald City. We first heard about the series in 2014, but then things went quiet. Then news arrived that NBC had cancelled it before even one munchkin had made it onto screen. Move forward to 2015, and NBC changed their minds, and picked it back up again. With Mirror Mirror & Immortals director Tarsem Singh behind the camera for all 10 episodes, and David Schulner (The Event, Dracula) as showrunner, it finally seems Emerald City has found it’s footing.

It might not be anything like a version of Oz we’ve seen before, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. US audiences will get to judge for themselves when it lands on NBC in January. No news on a UK pick up yet, but keep an eye on the Emerald City uk air date page for the latest information.
