Charmed-ish?.. CW Planning A Charmed Reboot!

Once again, tv has delved back into itself, and come up with a reboot of an old(ish) show. This time the network is the CW, and the show is Charmed. Although it’s a somewhat different Charmed than the 1998-2006 version that starred Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, Rose McGowan and Shannen Doherty.

Rather than a straight reboot, this version will be set in 1976 based around a small town in New England, USA. It will still feature 3 witches fighting evil, but there’s no mention of them being sisters. According to unconfirmed reports, the 3 witch character descriptions are:

Paige: Caucasian Cheerful, curvy, wholesome and as all-American as the apple pie she can’t wait to serve to the husband she has yet to marry. Paige’s main goal in life is to marry a rich doctor and be a wife and mother.

Annie: Caucasian. Intense, smart, and quick to anger. She dresses neutrally, though she could give two s–ts if you like her outfit, so stop wondering what ‘neutral’ means. But under that tough façade, well… there is a fragility. A person desperate to be loved, and love.

Tina: African American. Whip-smart, Tina is one dissertation (and one dissertation advisor) away from a PhD. She can be reserved, even standoffish, in uncomfortable situations, but she picks up on everything and she’s definitely making quick, accurate judgments about you.

So, with the exception of ‘Paige’, they have different names to the original characters, and given one of the 3 is described as African American, it seems unlikely they are blood related sisters. It is possible they are setting this up more as a prequel than an actual reboot, which would make sense, given the time period setting.

The remake/reboot comes from the Jane the Virgin creative team, with Exec Producer Jennie Snyder Urman leading the project, and writers Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin penning the script. CW has ordered a one hour pilot script, so we’ll see where it goes from there.

If you’re wondering what the original witches had to say on the idea, Holly Marie Combs, who played Piper Halliwell on the original show tweeted the following diplomatic tweet:

Alyssa Milano, who played Phoebe Halliwell added:

We’ll let you know if we hear anymore information.
