The Expanse Renewed For Season 3

by Dave Elliott

Syfy’s epic space drama The Expanse will carry on… expanding… for a 3rd season the US network announced last night.

Set hundreds of years in the future, where humans have colonized the solar system, The show features various factions of humanity trying to co-exist, whilst maintaining an uneasy peace.  The U.N. controls Earth, Mars is an independent military power, and then there are the ‘Belters’ who mine resources from the Asteroid Belt, where air and water are more precious than gold.

In the midst of this background tension, various stories emerge, which point to a greater conspiracy. Detective Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane) is tasked to locate a missing woman, Julie Mao (Florence Faivre); The ice hauler ‘Canterbury’, is involved in an tragic incident, which only serves to raise tensions across the system; And back on Earth, UN Exec Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo) will do whatever it takes to stop Mars and Earth going to war. As time goes by, it starts to emerge that these seemingly random events, may in fact be connected, and point to the largest conspiracy ever to threaten the existence of humanity.

“The Expanse is a gorgeous, thrilling, emotional series that has quite simply raised the bar for science fiction on television,” commented Chris McCumber, NBCUniversal’s President of Entertainment. “We, along with the fans, are looking forward to continuing the journey with our partners at Alcon Television Group and the series’ brilliant cast and crew.”

The show was developed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man), and is based on the series of novels by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (using the pseudonym James S. A. Corey).

If you haven’t yet caught The Expanse, you can find Season 1 of this brilliant sci-fi series right now on Netflix UK. Season 2 is about halfway through airing in the US. We don’t have any official word from Netflix as to when Season 2 will land in the UK yet, but we’re assuming it will be after the entire 2nd season has aired across the pond. Keep an eye on The Expanse UK Air Date page for the latest info.
