Star Trek: Discovery Adds Rainn Wilson As Harry Mudd

A little bit of news slipped out over the weekend, that Star Trek: Discovery has added the classic Original Series character, conman Harry Mudd, into the upcoming reboot, and he will be played by The US Office’s Rainn Wilson.

Harcourt Fenton Mudd was a con artist who popped up a number of times to annoy the original crew of the Enterprise. Despite being a convicted felon, he was never really seen as a full blown villain, and rather more of an lovable rogue, who used his wits to live outside the law.

Roger C. Carmel played the character in the 60’s series, but now Rainn Wilson will pick up the baton, as we see a younger Harry getting himself (and presumably the crew of Discovery) in trouble. Hopefully they retain the natty moustache!

Wilson is of course, best known as Dwight Schrute in the US remake of The Office but has also appeared in films such as James Gunn’s Super, and the short lived, but highly entertaining tv show Backstrom.

As we know, Star Trek: Discovery is set in the ‘prime’ universe about 10 years before Kirk, so it makes sense we may come across earlier versions of characters we already know. As we announced back in January, James Frain (Gotham, Orphan Black, The Tudors) has been cast as Spock’s father Sarek, so I expect we might see a few other familiar names through the first 13 episode season.

Star Trek: Discovery takes a different approach to is predecessors, by having a Lieutenant Commander as the main focus of the show, rather than the Captain. The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green takes the lead as Lt. Cmdr Rainsford, whilst Jason Isaacs is in the big chair as Captain Lorca. Additional cast already announced includes Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp,Terry Serpico, Shazad Latif, Chris Obi, Mary Chieffo, Mary Wiseman, Sam Vartholomeos and Maulik Pancholy.

Star Trek: Discovery is due to take to the stars in the Autumn, and will land on Netflix in the UK, the day after the US broadcast.
