Star Trek: Discovery Casts Sarek, But Delayed Again

I think it would be fair to say, the attempt to bring Star Trek back to the small screen has not been without it’s issues… Star Trek: Discovery, which starts production at CBS next week, has been delayed yet again.

According to EW, the premiere date has moved from May, and does not yet have a new slot. This is after the show was delayed from it’s original premiere date of January to allow more development time. When CBS were asked to comment on this report, they rather dodged the answer by saying “Production on Star Trek: Discovery begins next week. We love the cast, the scripts and are excited about the world the producers have created. This is an ambitious project; we will be flexible on a launch date if it’s best for the show. We’ve said from the beginning it’s more important to do this right than to do it fast. There is also added flexibility presenting on CBS All Access, which isn’t beholden to seasonal premieres or launch windows.” Which I guess is fair enough. It’s better to have it right than rush to put it out, and end up with a big mess.

Over on the casting side, a very familiar face has landed the part of Spock’s father, Sarek. Fans of Gotham will recognise James Frain as Theo Galavan (who goes on to become Azrael), but he’s also appeared in The Tudors, True BloodOrphan Black, Grimm, True Detective, Agent Carter, Fringe, 24, The White Queen… Basically if it’s a historical drama or sci-fi, there’s a fair chance James has popped up in it at some point! He does have a good vulcan look to him, so I would say he’s a really good fit here.

At this point in the Star Trek timeline, Sarek was Vulcan ambassador to the United Federation of Planets where he married an Earth woman called Amanda, who went on to give birth to Spock, the half-Vulcan we all know and love.

As of this moment we’ve moved Star Trek: Discovery to the ‘Unknown 2017’ category in the UK Air Dates page, but we’ll update things as we hear more.
