And at number 46 in my list of “phrases I never thought i’d say about Jude Law”… Jude Law is to play Albus Dumbledore. This will of course be young Dumbledore, who is set to make an appearance in the next installment of the ‘Fantastic Beasts‘ movies.
In the much-anticipated new Wizarding World film, Jude will portray Dumbledore decades before his tenure as Headmaster at Hogwarts, when is still serving as the wizarding school’s Transfiguration professor. He is also a contemporary of Gellert Grindelwald, the charismatic dark wizard who believes wizards are superior to Muggles and No-Majs.
“As fans ourselves, we are thrilled to have Jude Law joining the Fantastic Beasts cast, playing a character so universally adored,” commented Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Pictures. “Jude has been a member of the Warner Bros. family for years and we’re excited to embark on this new adventure with him.”
J.K. Rowling, overlord of the Wizarding realm, made her screenwriting debut on ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, proving she’s not only an extremely talented author, but can knock out at pretty decent script too. She will also be handling the screenplay for the second movie, which moves deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt Scamander and our other heroes have to decide on their allegiances.
Director David Yates, who will be helming the new movie, added, “Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him. I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.”
Jude Law is of course well known for films such as Sherlock Holmes, A.I., Road to Perdition, and The Talented Mr. Ripley, which won him a BAFTA Award and an Oscar nomination. He will next be seen in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and is currently starring in the Sky Atlantic’s The Young Pope… “Jude Law plays the Pope”, being number 45 in my list of “phrases I never thought i’d say about Jude Law”…
Principal photography begins this summer on the new Fantastic Beasts adventure and is the 2nd of 5 movies planned in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
Fantastic Beasts 2 (I’m sure it’ll have a better name when it’s released… like the ‘Kettle Of Doom’ or ‘The Aardvark of Truth’), is slated for release on the 16th November 2018.
