X-Files Gets 10 Episode Long 11th Season!

After a lot of back and forth, Fox has finally agreed terms to bring The X-Files back for Season 11 the network announced last night. The new ‘event series’ will be 10 episodes long, up from 6 when they revived it last year.

Stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, along with creator and showrunner Chris Carter are all set to return. No word on other casting yet, although Mitch Pileggi is expected to be back as FBI Assistant Director Skinner.

“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators. These are the hallmarks of great TV shows,” commented Fox president David Madden. “And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide. Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.”

The previous 6 episode season 10 sparked a number of revivals from Fox’s back catalogue, including the return of 24, and Prison Break. The original series ran from 1993-2002 and bounced from heavy scifi drama to sublimely silly comedy in places, but it’s still beloved by fans, and spawned a couple of movies, books and audio drama.

The X-Files Season 11 will return to Fox US either late 2017 or early 2018. Channel 5 aired season 10 in the UK, but we don’t know if that was a one-off deal, or if they have any ‘first refusal’ rights to further seasons. If not, I suspect Sky or Fox UK would be a likely home for it.
