90’s Sitcom ‘Roseanne’ Is Coming Back!

The trend for reviving old shows continues… This time it’s apparently the turn of ‘Roseanne‘, the massively popular 90’s sitcom!

According to an article in Deadline, Roseanne Barr, John Goodman and Sara Gilbert are all signed up to return, with deals having been offered to Laurie Metcalf and the other cast members. Original series exec producers Tom Werner is spearheading the revival, along with Barr, Gilbert and tv producer Bruce Helford. The plan is for an 8 episode limited series run, which is being pitched to networks and streaming services.

For those of you too young to remember, Roseanne followed the Conners family, who lived hand-to-mouth, in the fictional small town of Lanford, Illinois. It centred around mother Roseanne, her husband Dan, and their 3 children in a comic (and sometimes quite dark) portrayal of an average working-class American family.

Roseanne was a massive hit for original network ABC back in the 90’s, and gave big breaks to a number of people, both on screen and off. John Goodman went on to star in numerous movies including Argo, The Artist, and of course, The Big Lebowski. It was arguably Johnny Galecki’s biggest role before a little show called Big Bang Theory became popular. Scrubs star Sarah Chalke got her big break on the show, when she took over from Lecy Goranson as daughter Becky. And behind the camera, a young and talented writer called Joss Whedon got his first big break, before going on to create Buffy, Firefly, and become a massive Hollywood director.

At it’s peak, Roseanne was the number one show in the US, drawing in huge audience figures, so you can see why the idea of reviving it is popular. It also became slightly notorious for the odd way it ended. In the final scene, the events of entire last season had actually been a work of fiction, written by the character of Roseanne, as a way to get over the death of her husband Dan… That does beg the question “how are they going to bring Dan back?”, but I’m sure they’ll figure something out!

We’ll keep you updated on the Roseanne revival when we hear more…
