‘The Vampire Chronicles’ Optioned For TV Series By Paramount TV & Anonymous Content

As we mentioned back in November last year, Anne Rice announced on Facebook she has regained control of the theatrical rights to her massively successful ‘Vampire Chronicles’ series of books, and was working on a pilot script with her son, Christopher Rice, for a tv adaptation. Now those rights have been optioned by Paramount TV & Anonymous Content – the company behind Mr. Robot, 13 Reasons Why and The OA.

“It is undeniable that Anne Rice has created the paradigm against which all vampire stories are measured,” commented said Amy Powell, President of Paramount TV. “The rich and vast world she has created with The Vampire Chronicles is unmatched and sophisticated with 90’s gothic undertones that will be perfectly suited to captivate audiences. The series is full of compelling characters led by Lestat, arguably one of the greatest original characters, literary or otherwise.”

For those of you that don’t know the series, The Vampire Chronicles consists of 11 books, and starts with Louis, a 18th century French colonial aristocrat, who is turned into the world’s whiniest vampire by the extremely charismatic Lestat. The series continues, mainly focusing on Lestat (I’m sure Louis would whinge about that too), as he continues his exploits across the ages.

Various attempts have been made to bring The Vampire Chronicles to screen, the most successful being in 1994 with an adaption of Rice’s first novel in the series ‘Interview With the Vampire’, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.

“In this unique golden age of television, I couldn’t ask for a finer or more passionate team to help bring my beloved vampire hero, Lestat, alive in a series of the highest quality,” commented Rice on the deal. “This is a dream come true, both for me and for Christopher and for the fans who have been asking to see the Brat Prince in this medium for years.”

This will be the fifth collaboration between Paramount TV & Anonymous Content, who worked together on 13 Reasons WhyBerlin Station, The Alienist, and upcoming Netflix series Maniac, which is a dark comedy starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stone.

Anne’s son Christopher Rice is going to be writing the series, and will serve as exec producer alongside his mother and Anonymous Content’s David Kanter and Steve Golin. No news on when or where The Vampire Chronicles tv series is likely to land, but it’s due to go out to networks soon, so we’ll keep you updated as things develop.
